Scenario planning is the buzzword in corporate and management circles. An organizational or a departmental head has to have an alternate Plan B ready while executing the Plan A. Undoubtedly, scenario planning is considered to be a mandatory requirement and denotes a reflection of person-in-charge’s vision, leadership and readiness to sail through in a particular bunch of events.
I have observed that this ‘Plan B phenomenon’ has ventured out from the domains of this elite sphere and is silently spreading in our whole social system these days engulfing more and more people into its dragnet.
What is a ‘Plan B phenomenon’? Going by etymological meaning and logic it is simply our fall back plan, period. But, when I tried to dig a little deep I find that it has several more dimensions and I won’t hesitate in saying that this Plan B phenomenon is the outcome of our sheer callus and casual attitude towards things around us, triggered by our liberated and fast track economy. We have witnessed huge changes on psycho-socio-economic front. Our growing economy has given us more per capita income, early start of earnings, financial revolution in terms of credit availability, fast pace of consumerism, sudden shift to vocational education from traditional education, enhanced women participation at work and more urban employment opportunities. Besides, it has equipped us with computers, cell phones, internet, satellite channels, trendy wheels, malls, and fashion labels. Today, half of our population who is earning is below 30 and the numbers are set to increase. Entire globe is eying this segment to pamper with the newest and the latest. Therefore, I believe we are going out of control and as a society we are failing to handle this sentiment because of its sheer nature of being inorganic – yes, we are witnessing an inorganic growth.
I guess our folks here will not term it as exaggeration if I say that our systems are not in place and our growth is emerging from the default. Things are moving up and as a result a ‘pull force’ is working for us. And, this is facilitating us in evolving as a Plan B society. Let’s look around. There are increased number of divorce cases and hence increased number of second marriages, there is rise in adoption cases, insurance sector is registering YoY growth continuously, fixed deposits & recurring accounts have less takers and MFs and stock market have successfully made in-roads, the trend of learning second language is catching up fast, dating sites are on a rise which means people are looking for a second place to find peace & pleasure, people are opting for early retirement to give focus to their other plans, seconds sale is attracting huge crowd, married women are taking up their second inning by resuming studies and joining work, coaching classes are at its peak as students are preferring those over their schools / colleges, SOHOs (Small Office Home Office) as a concept are gaining acceptance, no need to elaborate on increased activities on virtual space and lastly our regional political parties –as a second option- have started attracting electorates. There could be numerous more examples as we look deeper and wider. I term all this as activation of Plan B, our dependence on the Second.
It doesn’t leave me flabbergasted that over a period of time the Plan A has become the offshoot of our immediate emotions. We are living in a fast pace world where we are pressurised to offer instant solutions to establish our credibility in our peer group so much so that we are ready with the answers well before the question is put up. Plan A is impulsive. Its infatuation for a quick strike. That makes me believe that it’s not so thoughtful and well scripted to fetch a lasting success always to the extent that our social fabric has started getting dents. There is a great hurry to find a mate, to earn quick bucks, to roam around, to dine out, to pub, to flamboyancy, to modernize and to depict what we are not. We have been successful in disguising our fantasies under the cover of progress and social security.
Here comes the importance of Plan B. When we are through with the initial thrust of our life then we realize that our trueself has swept far away in this fast current. This brings in dissonance. Then we start soul searching and look for what actually we need. The passage of time teaches us a lot on our suitability and likings. It directs us to calm and peace. It confronts us with reality and truth. It exposes us to tradition and culture. It makes us explore values and ethics. It brings us back to our family and friends. It helps us realize our duties and responsibilities. It shapes us cautious and careful. It builds our character and faith. It grinds our vision and thinking. So tough it is to carve Plan B.
That’s the power of transition and it’s great to shoulder these responsibilities which only fewer generations in the history get a chance to do. Transition demands maturity to identify, understand and interpret Plan B, which should be on a sound base. Transition is a revolution, it’s a transformation, its modulation, it’s a movement, it’s a passage to change, it’s a tool to explore, it’s a process extremely delicate and fragile. But that’s what this generation is skillfully doing and will do so successfully. This is Generation X working on the project ‘Plan B’. Let’s hail the NEXT.
