Undoing the 'Idiot' Box
Well, it's that time of the year again, when the holidays begin and a new series of the Idol show is around the corner in India. Just three seasons old Indian Idol has set a record in its popularity ratings. And whats more its even had a 'real' impact on politics in the country(The latest Idol was instrmental in a reawakening of identity consciousness in his hilly native land in eastern India)
What is Role of T.V in society.
The idiot box has come of age in India, and many other countries,today. With cinema and perfomance arts facing the heat of a changing lifestyle and leisure habit, the T.V has emerged the clear winner. In India stars like Sharukh and Amitab are looking at the T.V to bail them out of the revenue crunch that cinema is facing.
The Idol series marks a new phase of entertainement on Indian T.V. It has made explicit the networks; communication, desire, consumption, that people exist in and also revealed the way corporations have for ages used these to expand profit.
Yet, more significantly and inadvertently it has also brought to the fore identity issues, the role that entertainment plays in a culture and made explicit the core emotions that T.V entertainment has always capitalised on.
Television has proved to be a site where political issues, popular perceptions and prejudices and aspirations of the 'nation' or 'region'
play out. It would be very instrumental in analysing these aspects to help find clues to where the real issues originate.
What the Couch potatoes need to do.
Sharing the music, emotional appeal and fun elements of these shows would be a great way to watch T.V in an intelligent manner.
After all good T.V plays a role no less than the arts. It's enjoyable and it provokes thought.
