So, meet my team Red_Ribbon_Team powered by Saadhan Helpline, the pioneers in giving information, help, advice, counseling.... about HIV/AIDS.

To chat with them,

Online relationships can be a tricky business since you can't be sure about the person you have never met before! It's like a blind date. And if you are getting into a sexual relationship, then you have to be a bit too careful!

I think the 'safe sex passport' for online lovers is a damn good idea! I mean, anyone can say that he/she does not have any STD but how can you be sure? 45 year old pot bellied uncles claim to be 20-year-old hunks from the football team online, after all!

Anyway, so, tomorrow on World AIDS Day, a US company will be launching ing the world’s first safe sex passport for extra “information protection” to online partners .

How does it work?
Anyone above 18 can pay and get The Safe Sex Passport. When you receive the card, you are referred to an associated laboratory where you can get tested for five major STDs - namely HIV, genital herpes, chlamydia, gonorrhea and syphilis

Then the test results are tied to the card. And when you meet your online partner, you can call a phone number and get the test results and test date for you, along with identification information so that you are sure about the identity of the person.

What's more, subscribers to the Safe Sex Passport will a get virtual health certificate, which they can post on their online dating or any SNS profile page.

With people getting aware, I'm sure this idea will be a big hit. I hope it is! It will also do away with anxiety among many people.

I have read several e mails that spread utterly ridiculous rumours and panic. And more irritating is people falling for them and forwarding without checking for facts! It's spreading such false information and making people worry unnecessarily!

This was the forward I got from so many people who I mistook to be educated!

"In Ahmedabad 10 yrs old boy had eaten "panipuri" about 15 days ago and fell sick, later when he had his health check done doctors diagnosed that he had AIDS. His parents couldn't believe it...? Then the entire family under went a checkup none of them was suffering from that. The doctors checked with the boy if he had eaten out? And the boy says he had panipuri one evening. The hospital team went there to check. They found the panipuri seller had a cut on his finger while cutting the onions, and his blood had spread in the food. When they had his blood checked... the guy was suffering from AIDS but he himself was not aware. Please take care while u eat from road side panipuri wallas or roadside vendors. kindly forward this message to your friends!!! "

There is absolutely no truth in this! The fact is that even if someone's blood has HIV virus, when the blood leaves the body, it gets disinfected that is the virus die immediately. So, only when fresh blood comes in contact with a wound or enter your body would you get the infection.

The only way pani puri could harm you is give you a bad tummy if you eat too much and at an unhygienic place.

Another forward I got was about a girl sitting on a needle in the theatre and getting a note, 'welcome to the World of AIDS'. Again, the same logic. Even if the needle has an HIV infected person's blood, it HAS to dry blood, which has no infection at all. Obviously the person has to have planted the needle much earlier to stick the note there or else he'd get caught and thrashed out.

So, even if you do sit on a needle and get a note... just get an antiseptic injection and God help you if you sat on the needle to deep and can't sit for a few days!

So, please don't fall for such stupid forwards. You can do what I do... call the person an educated fool and send the explanation and ask him / her to go get a life! Some people just get cheap thrills from doing such things, like making you believe you will have 7 years of ill luck if you didn't forward their stupid message to 70 people.

Like I said earlier, you guys can ask me questions about HIV/AIDS and I will answer them. Trust me there may be things that you must probably not be aware of - some misconceptions or what. It's nothing to be ashamed of. Not everyone knows 100 % about HIV/AIDS.

PLEASE NOTE THAT YOUR NAME IS NOT BEING REVEALED. ALL THE COMMENTS AND QUESTIONS APPEAR AS ANONYMOUS.

Anyway, I'll put the question in black and my reply in red... And the latest question first. So, here goes....

If i want to have sex with a girl but don't have a condom at that time, then what are the instructions for safe sex? Bcoz i don't like to wear condom... then no taste of sex.. what do you suggest?
Hey! You MUST wear a condom. If you don't have it and the girl is not wearing one either, then don't have sex, especially not if you don't know the girl well enough.

As for not liking condoms, it's a very dangerous thing to not wear a condom just because you feel it won't satisfy you! Well, there are ultra thin condoms available that won't make you realize that you are wearing one.

I want to ask that if sumhow while sucking the secretion gets inside can it cause AIDS?
Oral sex may seem harmless because it doesn't seem like the regular vaginal / anal intercourse, but it has its risk. Like I said before, any form of insertive or receptive oral sex with an infected partner can give you HIV because there is contact between sexual secretion of one person with the vagina, anus or mouth of the other. But please note you may get HIV ONLY IF THE PARTNER IS INFECTED.

Does masturbation have any effect?
No, masturbation has no effect whatsoever. In fact, it's much safer. Well, simply because our hands don't have anything to take the secretion inside the body like mouth, vagina or anus has...

If an infected female does oral sex on a non-infected male by mear sucking without any protection, does the male get infected?
Yes, there is every possible chance. Any kind of sexual transmission between two people, if one is infected, could give HIV to the uninfected person. Basically, sexual transmission happens with any form of contact between sexual secretions of one partner with the anal, genital or oral mucous membranes of another. HIV can be transmitted through insertive as well as receptive oral sex.

Can homosexual act lead to AIDS? (this was asked in a private message)
A very big YES to that! In fact, the risk of transmitting of infection through anal sex is far greater than oral or vaginal sex. Any unprotected receptive sexual acts are more susceptible to getting HIV from the infected insertive act.

Please inform us about Screening tests(approx. cost and time after exposure it bcoms positive) and confirmative tests(centres in india where it is available) for HIV...

The average period of risk after exposure is 25 days but you can say surely only after at least 3-6 months. At times it takes years also for patients to know that they are HIV Positive because they go for the HIV test in a couple of days, when tests would show negative even if it's positive.

HIV/AIDS screening and confirmative tests are done at most hospitals, diagonistic centres, clinics, nursing homes, etc all over India.
It's too long a list to give here, so I got this directory of STI clinics from NACO (National AIDS Control Organization) a Ministry of Health & Welfare Govt of India initiative. These clinics have testing, treatment, counseling.

People actually dont die of AIDS itself do they? its because of other diseases,, hiv/aids jus makes them vulnerable correct,, i mean thats wat i think...

Yes, you are right. You don't die of AIDS per se. Damaged immune system caused by AIDS is responsible. This is what happens...

  • HIV destroys white blood cells called CD4+ T cells that help our immune system function normally.
  • And if tests for AIDS are positive, it means the person's immunity drops to a fatal level. That person becomes extremely  vulnerable to infections or disease like a variety of cancers, virus, etc. because of damaged immune system. The same infection/ disease may actually not even affect a person with a normal immune system. So, finally, since your damaged immune system cannot guard you against the illness, a person dies.

Love thy neighbour. And if you're taking your love to bed, beware! Having sex may prove to be your ticket to heaven in more ways than one! For all you know, your neighbour may be infected with AIDS, even if you could never make that out!

So Playboy... Hope you'll be playing it safe. Got a date with the hottie and you just can’t wait to get laid? But don’t be laid back about protection! Yeah, yeah you may be educated, rich and do not go to commercial sex workers. But trust me HIV/AIDS won’t ask your name, educational qualification or if you are an office boy or the MD. AIDS doesn’t discriminate. Public figures like basketball player Magic Johnson, British singer Freddie Mercury, Justice Edwin Cameron (South African judge in the High Court) got infected too.

So, use a condom. It has been invented for a purpose! Always be game for it. Most of the 32.7 million people people who live with AIDS worldwide must have thought nothing could happen to them too. You don’t want to be a statistic during a research for one of the World AIDS Day, do you?

And hey girls. You have to be responsible too! Insist on your man wearing a condom… take precaution from your end too. Condoms are available for women as well. Don’t be shy to use them. It’s for your safety. Get tested, especially if you're getting married. Infected mothers pass the virus on to babies too. Insist on your fiance getting tested too.

Heard about the cat who'd close her eyes when she saw danger? Don't be that cat! Just because you can't see it, doesn't mean it doesn't exist. And just because it hasn't touched you doesn't mean it won't ever. Get your doubts clarified. Talk about it as comfortably and confidently as you talk about the weather, the govt or cricket. Bindaas bol! Don't oppose sex education. Don't shy away from telling your kids about it. Don't change channels during an AIDS Awareness message. Do you know that youngsters are most vulnerable to contracting HIV/AIDS? Approximately 32 % of all people with AIDS in India are the youth.

The ABCD of avoiding HIV/AIDS...

Abstain from unprotected sex. Obviously because you never know that the person may be infected
Be faithful! No new sexual partner for a new day...
Condom use. This is most important!
Don't use used injections

Oh, well, I could go on and on... But I'm not here to talk alone... I believe in interaction... of all kinds So, let's talk about it.

And, I'm not just plain talking. I have some interesting stuff about AIDS awareness too. Check out my Photo Album for innovative AIDS awareness posters, photographs, etc. There are Videos too. So, spread the Awareness and stop the deadly virus from spreading. Scrap your friends the red ribbon and the funky condom.

I'll be back with a lot more!

Be safe not sorry. There are better things to die for!
