Tulsi was shocked to see herself in the mirror! She couldn’t believe what she saw!

Tired face, eyes without the usual sparkle, drooped shoulders, dark circle beginning to appear around the eyes…all tell tale signs of something not being right about her!

Even when she had her crippling back ache, Tulsi never looked this distraught!

Her friend Ravi’s words were ringing in her ears still…

“Cheer up girl! You deserve better than this!” he had said to humor her.

She had matched up to him by responding thus,

“I know. I deserve a four bedroom home, two cars, household help and a fat bank balance”.

They had laughed heartily…or were it a hearty laugh!

Tulsi was increasingly getting tired….tired of…her routine, her drudgery, her existence revolving around a set of problems!

“How am I responsible for this? Can I ever get out of this rut?” were questions not exactly bothering…but nagging her!

She had married the guy she had fallen in love with. He was a great guy, at least to begin with. Smart, articulate and above all creative, he was a go getter, and initially they were going places!

Of late, hubby-dear is mired in his own problems at work. Having been passed over for a promotion recently he was nurturing a great grouse, justifiably so!

Yet, Tulsi felt it was not wise on his part to show it on his colleagues! He enjoyed working in to late nights, and tended to go to office around afternoon. Most of the ‘politically important’ meetings happened during the early part of the day!

Invariably when he reached office, such meetings would be over and done with and the boss would be seething with anger. On his part hubby-dear would complain about work being dumped on him and him not being considered for promotion!

“The writing is clear on the wall” Tulsi told herself!

Her attempts to make him see the reality were getting nowhere! In fact, such attempts were adding to his resentment! She was beginning to feel as if he was ignoring her good advice.

She was angry….with him and with herself….and about the general condition they were in!

“God, why should this happen to me?” was her silent anguish!

The conversation with Ravi was refreshing. Ravi was not telling anything new. She knew everything he was telling her! Yet…the hopelessness of the situation was tiring her!

The phone beeped…

A text message from Ravi:

“When things go wrong as they sometimes will:
When the road you are trudging is all uphill;
When the funds are low and the debts are high;
And you want to smile, but you have to sigh;
When care is pressing you down a bit
Rest you must but don’t quit.

Success is a failure turned inside out,
The silver tint of the cloud of doubt,
And you can never tell how close you are;
It may be near when it seems afar
So, stick to the fight when you are hardest hit
It’s when things go wrong that you mustn’t quit!”

A longish message in deed.....

Tulsi held her head high and told herself, “I ain’t quitting! I am a fighter. I will fight until I succeed!”

PS:
Tulsi is real…and she is amongst us…inside us ….and she is us!
I wish this Tulsi, whom I love, the most, success in her endeavor!
I know she would succeed…and I would wait for that day when she shares her success story!

Location: Foster City, Suburban SFO, CA, the US of A! Date & time: contemporary

Jack had just finished mowing the lawn and had come inside to have a bottle of beer! It was early afternoon. As he opened the fridge, he noticed Jill standing near the kitchen counter, almost spoiling for a fight!

“You beer guzzling, snobby son of a bitch! Why are you ignoring me?” Jill was shouting!

“Jill, this my first bottle of beer in over a week!” Jack was already shocked! It was like a cargo train hitting him when he least expected it! The power of Jill’s words cut his being, his soul and emotion, like a well sharpened saw!

Jack quickly recovered from his shock and looked at Jill!

She was trembling, either with rage, or by the force of her own outburst! Whatever it was it did not portend well!

Jack quickly glanced towards the hall to see if Bill, their nine years old son was around! Then he realized that Bill would be at the Sunday school offered by his parish church! He sighed imperceptibly!

Sure, he had a problem on hand. A mild mannered Jill bursting out this was a bad omen!

“Can we sit down and talk?” Jack tried amiably.

Strangely he was not angry. He was surprised by himself. Jack fifteen years earlier would have been competitive and probably, would have ‘out-shouted’ Jill by several decibels! But not now!

It was not a deliberate choice! He did not feel competitive! He saw a crying child in Jill; a child throwing tantrums for not getting something that was promised to her!

Jack had been lucky to have retained his clients despite the global down turn that seemed to have hit the States rather disproportionately stronger than other countries! His revenue had taken a beating but he did not go bankrupt! Jill and he could sit down and work out many things that helped them tide over the ‘trough’! They were those rare ‘successful survivors’ of the ‘melt-down’! Yet, he knew it had taken some emotional toll!

Jill and he had delayed many purchases that affected their comforts! Neither Jill nor he had bought a dress or a shoe in the past three quarters. They never deprived Bill, but had scaled down their ‘affection – purchases’. Even Bill seemed to understand that!

Bill’s bed room was crying for a makeover for sometime! He was growing up faster than they had imagined! His feet were beginning to protrude out of his bed when he slept on it!

Jack had found a reasonably priced quick fix for that problem. He made a bunk-bed out of some cheap lumber that came up on a distress sale. He had even saved on the cost of hiring a handyman! He had done the job himself!

But when it came to fixing the dresser, Jack ran out of ideas! To begin with he could not get the right type of wood! Despite his best creative efforts, the dresser he made ended up looking like tool boards in a mechanic’s garage…the only difference being the mirror sitting in the space meant for tool holders!

Jill was not very thrilled about it! Yet, she accepted it without grumbling, under the circumstances.

Bill was showing some promise as a budding golfer! Jack and Jill had enrolled him for coaching in golf with a well known and expensive trainer! Despite the down turn, they had decided to continue this training. Result was that the barbeque parties Jill used to organize twice every month had become once a quarter! These parties were all women parties, where Jill connected with her girl pals!

Jill had to suspend her Japanese Language training as well to accommodate the deficit golf coaching for Bill created! She did not complain!

Jack reduced his beer intake by half to begin with and later reduced it by even half of that! They both started taking stock of all groceries and began to maintain an inventory list! This too helped them in saving money that they used to normally blow away in Costco!

Then an opportunity to earn a little money came along! Jill’s cousin from the Midwest had moved from LA to SFO having lost a job. She wanted to know if she could stay with them as a paying guest! After a lot of deliberations Jack and Jill agreed and Bill’s room became the guest room, and Jack went to the sofa in the hall!

While all these life altering adjustments were happening, Jill had never blown her top like she did now! But, why now?

“Have all these taken their collective toll?” Jack was wondering looking at Jill!

Jill was already sobbing! Jack went near and put his hand around her shoulder and said softly, “I am not sure, what actions of mine have caused this distress. But whatever it is I apologize for that. If we can sit down and talk this out, this would be better for all of us. What do you think?”

Jill was already mellowing!
“You idiot! We make adjustments in life style to make a comfortable living! Did you ever tell me you visited Dr. Kaesar? Whenever, I wanted to make love, I could notice you were uncomfortable, yet you never declined. But, you never initiated it like earlier’ She was glaring at him!

Jack smiled weakly, “Hey Dr. Kaesar is an orthopedic, and he has nothing to do with love making”

“You fool, ever since you started sleeping on that goddamned sofa you have hurt your back, and that tells on you, when we make love! Would you stop sleeping on sofa, or would you stop sleeping with me” Jill was looking at him!

“Well, the one grand we get from your cousin is very handy now!” Jack mumbled.

Jill interjected, “I don’t care about the one grand a month. I have asked Martha to look for another accommodation. She would be moving out in a week. I want you in my bed room! Is that clear?”

Jack and Jill got entwined in a passionate lip lock that they had not experienced for almost a year!

Mr. David Shepherd (Born December 27, 1940. Died: October 27, 2009), an umpire I would never be able to forget!

Normally non-controversial umpires do not get much attention! Shep was an exception!

A gentleman on the field and I understand from the flowing tributes that he was one off the field too!

A batsman himself, playing for Gloucestershire between 1965 to 1979, having scored twelve first class centuries and averaging around thirty, Shep was never in the reckoning for international selection!

His second season in cricket as an umpire started in 1981. He was quickly recognized as the ‘fairest minded’ umpire and got enlisted in the panel of umpires for the 1983 Cricket World Cup!

The fairest umpire in deed…not known to hand out unfair judgments, Shep would always give the benefit of the doubt to the batsmen!

Shep and Bird (Dickie Bird) were a rare combination of umpires who instilled a sense of fair judgment on the cricket field!

I still remember when a young and aggressive Pakistani pace bowler persistently asked “how is that”…Shep smilingly turning him down by saying “That’s not out boy!”

The cherubic Shep was a superstitious man as well!

Whenever the scores reached the Nelson figures…111 or 222 or 333 etc., Shep would hop on one leg! Seeing his massive frame doing this jig was entertainment in itself!

Shep was part of the ‘neutral umpires’ panel promoted by ICC from the inception of the idea in 1990s until he retired in 2005!

Good natured Shep had a long battle with cancer and was declared OUT on October 27, 2009.

How much I wish, God gave the benefit of the doubt to this jolly good fellow!

Adieu Shep…We will miss you!

May your soul rest in peace!

Supriya was in a tight corner. She had a huge argument with her teenaged daughter Sunny! The subject of the argument was Supriya’s mother…Durga!

Sunny was demanding to know why Supriya had asked Durga to leave home!

Though Supriya wanted to tell everything to Sunny, she was not sure, if Sunny would understand!

Supriya tried a neutral tack!

“Well, my mom is a difficult person to get along! I thought it would be better if she had her independence”

Sunny glared at her, “Granny is diabetic and she needs help! You have left her to defend for herself”

“Sunny! Your granny is very well to do! She has a full time nurse attending to her. She is not facing any physical difficulty now” Supriya was trying to explain.

“Mom, you are mean! That’s all I can tell you now!” Sunny retorted.

Supriya’s efforts to control herself failed. She started crying.

Tears rolling down her cheek, Supriya went upstairs and brought a shoe box containing some papers and photographs, and handed them over to Sunny!

“Sunny! I did not want to do this! But you left me with no choice” saying this Supriya went into her bedroom and locked it from inside.

Sunny nonchalantly carried the box to her bedroom.

There was absolute silence until the dinner time.

When Supriya came to the dinner table, she saw Sunny already seated there. She had red eyes and swollen face, clearly indicating that she had cried!

“Are you okay baby?” Supriya asked her with concern!

Sunny came running to her and hugged her tight and started weeping!

“Calm down baby.” Supriya consoled her.

“I was more shocked when I learnt this” Supriya started telling her!

“Sunny, your biological father passed away when you were five. I was single until you were ten and then met Girish. Though Girish was older to me by ten years, he was so wonderful to me that I had fallen in love with him instantly. Very soon we married and he moved in with me. All was well, until one afternoon…” Supriya was choking!

Supriya drank a glass of water and cleared her throat…

“I was having a very small office not far away from home then. My work used to keep me very busy, and I never used to have heavy lunch. So, I never visited home during lunch time. That day, I did not have break fast as I had to go and meet a client early. I was hungry by mid-day and decided to come home early for lunch. I had a set of keys with me. I came home and went straight to the kitchen to see if something was available to eat. That’s when I noticed the cork opener was lying near the sink. I had not used it in a few weeks and I was wondering. Then I noticed the handbag! It was your granny’s! Then it struck me that my mom would have come home. Granny had a set of keys too. When she came home, she used to come in silently and spent time in the library. Expecting her in the library I went straight upstairs. As I was climbing the stairs, I heard voices from the guest bedroom. I went in to inquire….only to find Granny and Girish in a very compromising position”

Supriya continued, “I was shocked. But I gathered myself quickly. My mom left the place without a word. I filed for divorce and got it through mutual consent. I was not sure how to handle granny. So I let her stay on for a while. And recently, I found her again inviting Girish…to this house….my home! Your home! I could not take it any longer. I asked her to get out”

“Baby! I am not sure if I have done anything wrong. But I could not forgive my mother for doing this to me!” Supriya began sobbing uncontrollably.

“I am sorry mom. I perfectly understand your emotions. You have done the right thing! I love you mom” Sunny was hugging Supriya!

The shoe box that Durga had forgotten to take along with her…was lying open on the dining table, revealing the love letters Durga and Girish had written to each other, and the photographs they had taken of each other and together, even before Girish had befriended Supriya!

“He is my right hand” …we often hear such remarks and wonder! In a predominantly right handed world, ‘right hand’ has assumed a disproportionately higher importance!

I am sure a left handed person would also refer to his/her ‘man Friday’ as ‘my right hand’!

Well…the question is not about my etymological curiosity!

I learnt the importance of my right hand recently...and of course the importance my left hand too!

This Diwali, having decided to just ‘supervise’ the ‘cracker bursting’ chore rather than participating in it, I was sure harm would not come in my way! But then the best laid plans of man and mice….

My daughter and wife had almost exhausted the entire stock, and my daughter was holding a “ribbon” (that spits fire with high intensity), when wind blew the ribbon precariously closer to a box of crackers lying nearby, setting a ‘flower pot’ on fire accidentally.

Seeing that and realizing the possibility of some calamity, I did what comes to me naturally….act and then think!

I picked up the flower part and threw it away from the boxes of crackers and the kids standing around them! But my reflexes were not as good as I thought! The flower pot had started burning bright with the ‘mouth’ firmly between my fingers!

There I was dancing in pain….with five fingers on my right hand burnt by the chemical fire! My daughter was shrieking and my wife livid!

The next few days were sort of ‘hell on earth’ with ointments applied on the burnt hand. As a precaution, a shot of ATS had been given on the same day! I was out of action suddenly with my right hand in an unusable condition, albeit temporarily!

Food was no problem, as wife and daughter took turns to spoon feed me.

Work, no problem either, as it was a long Diwali weekend!

Operating computers out of the question, I was left with the choice of watching the TV or reading books.

I chose the latter option! I could surely catch up on my reading!

But the pain was when I had to dress up….or bathe! I had to invent a variant of sponge bath to ensure that I was clean….using only my left hand! As far as dressing up goes, I decided to emulate Salman bhai….in being shirtless…proclaiming to the world that…’hum kameez uthaar chuke hain sanam’!

Being left handed suddenly was so unnerving….

Like many things in life, I slowly got used to it! I had even ventured to log in and chat with a few friends! But then the QWERTY key board and its configuration….made my efforts extremely perilous….

To a female friend, who was doing something important that afternoon…I ended up typing “Good Lick” instead of “Good Luck”…ahem….I had to call her on phone and explain my predicament!

A gentle soul, she had forgiven me instantly!

Now, with blisters getting more manageable and right hand partly in action, I am able to type…so I did once again…what I love doing….blogging!

So…a very belated Season’s Greetings friends!

"I don't think anyone in India today, in politics or outside politics ...has reached the level of liberalism where vulgarity is also a fundamental right."

This was Salman Kurshid’s advice to the India Inc.!

Honorable minister feels ‘excessive’ salaries to CEO are vulgar!

Let’s look at our austere ‘netas’ and ‘babus’….

No neta worth his salt today, is willing to step out of his bedroom without ‘appropriate category’ of security! Security doesn’t come cheap! It costs the tax payers….Now, as in corporate world, if we add the cost of security to the salary of the neta, for the valuation purpose, what happens?

Netas no longer travel in lowly “Ambassadors”…they too need swanky cars! What about the perquisite value of this?

The bigger the neta the larger the convoy becomes, and this means dozens of cars! What about the value of this added to the salary of the neta!

Netas are ‘entitled’ to personal staff and official staff, once they become law makers! Does the government add the cost of this ‘facility’ to the salary of the law maker? Does it get reflected in the Form 16? I doubt it!

These are ‘few’ of visible ‘line items’ in the netas’ expense sheets! Then when the law makers visit Delhi or the State Capital (as the case may be) they get certain ‘facilities’, which don’t come free! When they visit their constituencies …ditto!

When they stall the proceedings of the “Houses” they are members of….how much of tax payer’s money is getting wasted? Any valuation on this?

What about the Rs 1 Crore given away to each law maker for ‘developing their constituency’? Is it part of pay, perk or what?

What about all those foreign jaunts made by netas, to undertake studies, ranging from “pest control” to “Urban planning”! Have they submitted any meaningful reports that got implemented after such jaunts? Have they ever explained as to why they took members of their family on such ‘study tours’?

Come elections, we dont hear austerity being talked about!!

Minister saab! Advising others is easy…following what you preach is not!

I do not justify ‘excessive’ salaries to CEOs! But, they are not the major contributors to the ‘vulgarity’! Look at your own side….there are law makers who hold cities for ransom, and create huge losses! There are others who are happy putting up statues ….all on public money!

A CEO on the contrary takes 34-35% less salary than what is written in his contract! That is tax deducted at source! What about the netas? Do we see any accountability in them! Zilch!

A cabinet minister stays in a luxurious star hotel along with his MoS…reason? His official residence was getting ready! Couldn’t he take one of those numerous ‘guest houses’ in the capital?

Like charity….austerity begins at home! Not at thy neighbor’s home! Thy home first!

Practice and then preach….

An angel went to meet Lucifer
And I keep twiddling my thumb!
This Lucifer more viscious than satan himself!
And this angel close to my heart!
I could do nothing else but wait
With a prayer on my lips and hope in my heart!
Knowing all that happened in the past
I am waiting with bated breath!
The angel has been through hell
And now I wish her well!
When things are working her way
I don’t want things going astray!
As I can only wait and pray
I am doing so until the sky turns gray
And I know she wont be a prey!
