The long winding road, parallel to the National Highway looked like a black python with its mouth wide open at the horizon, waiting for them. Each of them felt different emotions within themselves and no one had any idea about the disaster that they’ll be unleashing.

It looked like a never ending ride. They felt an excitement surging and despair creeping in. Their brains advised them to turn back but their greedy hearts said otherwise.

After four hours of travel from Pondicherry, they reached a particularly dark spot of the road where there were patches of thorny plants on both the sides. They hid their two wheelers near a particularly thick patch. The Iron Gate was too small and too ordinary to protect the ages old palace. Maybe the gate was built atleast 25 years ago, because there was a Godrej lock hanging. They knew they could not jump over the gate or smash the lock. But they found out another way. The pillar holding the gate was so “strong” that one mighty heave of the five men was able to demolish it.

It was clear that the place was not in use for years. There were thorny bushes in what might’ve been a beautiful garden for the personal use of the members of the harem. As they walked through the bushes towards the ruins they noticed the absence of the noises of the insects of the night. Despair and hopelessness were hanging in the air. Arjun looked up at the night sky. He could see no moon or the stars. It was just a plain black surface. He thought of the scary Dementors that J always talked about, from her favourite Harry Potter series. She used to say that all warmth and light would diminish in a Dementor’s presence. But though there was no moon, he could clearly pick his path through the thorns. And he noticed the ‘palace’ giving out a fluorescent light.

Soon they were at the foot of ruined stone staircase leading into the ancient building. The landing was a sort of pretty big hall with enormous (literally) pillars supporting the broken ceiling. They walked across towards the other end of the landing; they had no idea where they were going. No map of any sort but they walked on as if they’d been living there for ages. There were too many corridors branching away from the path they were taking and too many doors. The walk seemed to take ages but abruptly they halted in front of a magnificent door that they felt like being stopped by a door that suddenly sprung up out of thin air.

Not betraying the majesty of the door was the inside which seemed to be ‘as big as the Nandanam hockey ground’, as Yuvi later put it to Diya. They climbed another staircase which led to another door. The door opened into a room that was a smaller version of the hall that they saw downstairs just now. There was only one way leading out from this room, apart from the one they entered. The next room turned out to be a small one built; it seemed, solely for the purpose of viewing the beauty of the rails of the winding staircase from the landing above. They climbed down the stair case. The descent was a long one and half way through neither the landing above nor the one below were visible and the darkness almost tricked them into believing that they were in another world altogether.

After crossing rooms after large rooms they entered one that looked like an extra large Royal court. They have finally reached the place!

They could almost hear all their hearts banging against their ribs.
Munna was the first of the dumbstruck friends to make a move.
‘So, is this the place where we’ll find the…err…treasure?’ he said eying the black spot in the centre of the hall.

Everyone was looking at it and felt that something sinister was ‘living’ there.

J looked around. She knew that she was not a part of a fantasy flick and except while reading the Harry Potter books she’s never imagined herself to be in fantasia. So she knew that she had not much time for more description about the place. She took the hammer she had brought with her and started tapping around the black spot.

Before they knew what happened, they were out in the midst of the thorn bushes. All they remembered were an ash screen and a big box full of precious gems as in a movie.

Zakir scratched his chin.
‘So…do you believe in what Yuvi says?’ he asked.
‘I dunno’, Munna replied. ’I’m confused. But what he says does make sense.’

‘Tell me what happened’

‘Well’, said Munna. ‘Arjun met with an accident on the day you and Savitha left for Goa. Yuvi thinks it’s because of the curse while of course, J thinks otherwise. Yuvi had planned to talk to Diya on that day. But she had a row over the entire thing at the college with J….’

‘So is that it?’ Zakir asked. ‘Everything between Yuvi and Diya is over?’

‘I dunno’, Munna continued. ‘But I think Arya has a real problem. Archana is in Bangalore now.’

Z: ‘Why?’

M: ‘Well, Arjun says that she quarreled with Arya for the necklace he took home. She thinks that J forced us all to steal. She’s with her parents now and Arya says she’s gone to visit them.’

Z: ‘Has she decided to divorce him or what?’

M: ‘No, no, no. It’s not that serious as of yet. Well, actually, except Savitha, all the others are not happy that we went to Thiruvakkarai with J. especially, those jewels and gems scared them, I think.’

Z: ‘I don’t think Savitha liked it either. What did your ammi say about this?’

M: ‘It’s the same with her. She and my fiancée have joined hands now, to ‘correct’ me. They are so sure that I stole those things.’

Z: ‘Even my ammi thinks the same. She won’t listen when I say that we just took some of those things that belonged to nobody. But ammi and abba say that they are the government’s property. Abba in particular is really furious, coz this happened right after I told them that I’m dating a Hindu girl.’

M: ‘To be honest, even I’m not comfortable with what happened.’

Z: “so, what next?’

M: ‘We’re meeting at Barista this evening. J is so fed up that she says she’ll end everything today.’

Z: ‘Hope she doesn’t cause any more trouble.’

* * * * * *
It was yet another boring hour. Shraddha ma’am was so engrossed in the subject that she didn’t notice the class sleeping.

J too was engrossed in her own thoughts. The sight of the palace and the box kept cropping up in her mind. She was watching the leaves of the jack fruit tree outside her classroom, swaying in rhythm with the gentle breeze. There had been lots of trees at the palace too. The Palace, where it all started. The ruined big building. The evidence, in fact, the only one, which stood for what happened so many years ago. The Palace…the root of their greed…the beginning of all their dreams…and nightmares…and troubles…..the palace….the palace…

He was panting. He had been running for a long time. She was chasing him purposefully to this place. He knew he shouldn’t be coming here.
He looked around and found a long deserted corridor with many doors. The place was dark but the walls seemed to give away a strange, greenish glow and he new that he can’t say whether it was night until he left the place.
He knew that the corridor at the floor below was an exact replica of this one here. He even knew which room he’ll be forced to go in and that his death awaited him there.
He could here the anklets moving. He cursed King Veerabaagu as he ran towards the Dancer’s room. He didn’t remember climbing down the stairs but suddenly he was in front of The Room. He went in.
It was as it was when he and his friends had come with J, except that the box was on the floor, beside the bid black hole which was dug to take it out, and the lid was open. But unlike then, today it was empty.

Then he heard somebody breathing. Actually it was like; the room itself had come alive.

‘So you’ve come back Arjun’, said the woman. Everything was eerily silent. The light was greenish and he felt as if he was underwater. It sort of closed in on him that he couldn’t see anything beyond the green colour. He could hear the anklets of the lady. Probably she has started dancing. Would she destroy this place?

‘It was not me, it was J’, was all that he thought.

He found that he couldn’t even open his mouth.

‘It was J’s idea, please!’

He wanted to scream.
[Arjun?]

‘My girlfriend is here. I need to go with her. Please, leave me’
[Arjun, wake up!]

He could feel the lady trying to strangle him.

‘You took it away’

‘Please! I’ll return them all.’

[Arjun! Wake up! What is it?]

‘You took the Zhai away’

‘Priya! Take me away Priya. Save me please.’

[Arjun, wake up please! You scare me. Do something Mr. Sharma]

‘You took MY Zhai away’

There was a flash of light and a bang. He screamed.
Everything was dark again. And another flash of light
.....

He lay panting on the bed and was sweating profusely. Priya and Arya were looking at him, anxious.

‘Are you okay Arjun?’ Arya asked.

‘I guess I am’, he replied. ‘Was it just a dream?’

‘What dream?’ asked Priya. ‘Don’t tell me it’s the same one you’ve been having since you came back from Thiruvakkarai’.

‘You’ve been having dreams?’ Arya chuckled. ‘Or, shall we call it nightmare?

‘Shut up’

‘We’re meeting this evening at the Marina’, said Arya. ‘I’ll let J know before that’.

‘J?’ said Priya, irritated. ‘It’s all because of her and you still trust her?’

‘Excuse me, Ms. Priya Nair. It was not J’s fault that your boyfriend’s having nightmares….’

‘Still supporting her, when she’s the reason your wife left you?’

‘Who said my wife left me? She’s visiting her parent-‘

‘Stop it now, both of you’, Shouted Arjun.

Both of them were furious. ‘Please?’ Arjun added.

He then asked Arya,’ But why the Marina?’

At this Priya left the place with a ‘go to hell’.

And both their mobiles beeped.

(Friends this is my first attempt to write a story for others to read. I'm not very confident about it. So please tell me if you don't like it, I'll stop posting more.)

(J        Jyotirmayi Prahlad
Yuvi     Yuveraj Kohli
Arjun   Arjun Mehta
Zakir   Zakir Rehman
Munna  Mohammed Ishmael
Arya   Aryavir Sharma)

Prelude
‘So you’ve come back Arjun’, said the woman. Everything was eerily silent. The light was greenish and he felt as if he was underwater. It sort of closed in on him that he couldn’t see anything beyond the green colour. He could hear the anklets of the lady. Probably she has started dancing. Would she destroy this place?

#1
‘Are you really as stupid as you look?’ said J. She was angry that Yuvi had spoiled her beautiful Monday morning. Everything went on well, as planned and she believed in the proverb ‘All’s well that ends well’.

‘Look I’m not being superstitious or anything okay?’ Yuvi said. He was scared that what they did had come to haunt them.

He looked at the sky, at the scorching sun above and checked the time in his watch. It was quarter to eight, in the morning. He needed to convince J before he dropped her at her college fifteen minutes from now. He heaved a sigh.

‘Diya thinks that I stole the diamond and she says-‘

‘Cut it off, it’s natural for her to think so. I mean nothing happened all these days and you’re worried about last week’s incidents?

‘J please’, he pleaded. ‘Do you then think that Arjun’s accident was just an accident?’

‘It’s not about my thinking it’s the fact. It was his fault in the first place and don’t say it was because he touched that thing. Any sensible person’d’ve known that taking a call while at the wheel is risky, got it? And as you can see, Yuvi, nothing happened to any of us, especially me, considering that I was the one who came up with the plan and took you all there.’

There was a tense silence inside the car, the two people inside thinking about the same thing. They didn’t notice what everybody else, from the traffic constable and the security personnel at the USIS to the commuters of the city’s infamous MTC, were looking at.

Unusually the sun was happily melting the tar roads so early in the morning. The sudden heavy shower did nothing to decrease the heat. A few observant people noticed that there was not a single cloud on the sky.

Yuvi stopped his vehicle near Gangotri. J got down and looked at him.

‘I know you’re worried Yuvi. But please think. We went there, did what we planned to do, and came back unscathed. Its over, it’s a closed subject. And remember all’s well that ends well, okay?’

He watched her cross the road and walk into the college. Then he looked at the sky and heaved another sigh.

‘All’s not well J and definitely, this is not the end’.

 Geetha

After I read Soniji's Princess Diary, I thought I should post this.

Geetha was a woman I'm really close with. She'd look like a really timid person with her short frame and soft voice, but she's the bravest woman I've ever met. She got married to a spineless, mean beast but the way she tackled every problem......I couldn't help crying for all the misfortunes that befell her.

She was brought up in Chennai. Her father was a well to do business man and she literally grew up like a princess with her siblings. When she was 13 her father met with an accident and all his freinds left him having got all his wealth. Her mother was an illiterate and she couldn't do anything except crying.

Geetha and her sisters were learning in a convent run school and the nuns didn't want to leave the family of three of their best students in sorrow. So their education went as it was. By next year the father got better and with his wife's jewelry he started a new unit, he and his son the only workers working all the time inspite of his son's tough school works. Their life dramaticaly changed. While her sisters became bolder the ever timid Geetha was softer. Maybe she was scared by the wicked fate that befell their family. She was always the class topper and a good Veena Vidhwan. In fact she got the 'Kalaimani' award for music students from the then CM M.G.Ramachandran.

Their native being Rajapalayam in southern TamilNadu, Geetha's mother decided to get her married to someone from there. An alliance did come but the guy had lost four of his right hand fingers in an accident. But otherwise everything seemed to be okay and the marriage got over. Only when she went to her in laws place did Geetha realise that she'd be living in a nightmare. Theirs was the meanest family she had known till then. She was mocked because she was a graduate. She was ill treated because she could speak in english and all rich people(read as educated) talked to her. She underwent so much that I don't want to repeat here. Her husband was worse. He had an illegel relationship with a nurse from "lower caste" and his father had made sure Geetha's family doesn't know anything. The husband had already fathered a child. So he was not supportive obviously. When she was about to have her first child and 3 three months after the baby was born he didn't visit her. Only then did they realise that the connection(with the nurse) they thought was severed was still there. He had taken all her jewelry to the lady and after the birth of this child registered their 'marriage' with  a date previous to Geetha's. You sure do know what generally happens to a lone woman. She suffered such tortures that a woman shouldn't experience but made sure she and her children were safe. Of course her parents were very supportive but they too were struggling with their problems.
After that I was old enoughto actually see what happened in her life and how she tackled it. Right now, she has got her daughter married and her son is in his final year of education. She underwent so much to reach this stage, so much that made me hate men and distrust society and its systems, so much that'd make you sick in stomach and her problems aren't solved yet. Her husband still comes sometimes. Her co sister forged her signature and took all the property belonging to her children for which she is legally fighting now.

This might seem really light but since I saw what her real problems were and how I felt, I didn't want to write it. Many of you might know people who struggled worse things in life, but I consider Geetha to be the bravest because I know I would've broken under he pressure that was put on her. Hers was a struggle as silent as the whisper of a flower yet as strong as the mighty hurricane. I hope she gets some peace atleast from this year onwards. She had faced more than enough.

It was on the fourth of this month that I decided to bunk two hours of classes. It'd be an experience and afterall bunking is a must in a college life, right? Right! I thought the 'experiece' I gain might also help me in my article for Star of the Sea- our college magazine. So right after an exam during the first hour, I came down to the grounds to 'experience' bunking.
The second hour was the English hour and anyway I'd be yawning over the lecturer's take on Swami's ideas (Swami & his friends - R.K. Narayanan). So I thought I'd do useful things like.....bunking. But once on the ground I didn't know where to go or what to do.
What do people do when they bunk classes?
Of course, the library.
I thought that it was logical and congratulated myself on my brilliance. But I was proved wrong as soon as I swiped my card. The library was more than empty. Every section wore a strangely deserted look. I guess I was the only person in the library at that time.
I realised how stupid I was, the moment I came out. Bunker or not, people were mostly near the Canteen Area, on the NCC grounds and the OATs.
I went to the OAT in the Canteen area and sat near a group of unsuspecting darlings. I took out my notebooks and pens and thought I'd spy them in the pretext of practicing sums. But the girls I sat near turned out to be a group of first year additionals. What a nose cut!
Now I was facing the real problem. How do I find out who's a bunker and who isn't? Well, I was spared a tedious searching by two gangs. I hoped that they were bunking their classes. What is the use of losing an hour's attendence if I'm not doing anything useful? Sharada ma'am's braggings seemed like a heaven now but only that I couldn't go back  with only 20 minutes left in the hour.
The two gangs settled down rather noisily, gigling for God knows what. One was to my left and the other right in front. I named them the Fine Arts gang and the other the anon gang respectively based on my guess on their departments. One girl from the anon gang collected some money from the others and left for the Chat counter. Aha now I've found a prospective bunker. My happiness was short lived when the Fine Arts girls started a serious conversation about a P.G. course in fashion designing and the anons were sincerely reading their Optimization books. I let out a groan but no one took notice. Probably they thought my sum has gone wrong.
I heard a familiar voice close by and was shocked to see Ms. Lissie Alex, my faculty advisor. She was accompanying Sister Colleen North to the F block. I thought I was a goner but thank god she never turned this way. Whew! That was close.
By now both the sincere groups had started talking random things like Cricket, Abishek Bachchan, Aamir Khan, Prithvi,Ricky Martin, Fergie, Black eyed Peas and what not. I was excited initially but now got bored. They kept going for chats and meetoses and melodies and Maazas. What is this? Do people cut classes for this? I don't know what I was expecting but I knew it was not this. I ran back to the AC hour the momen the bell rang. I just couldn't bear the boredom and I swore I'd never ever bunk another class. My class room felt like heaven now.

What happened at the SCG during the second test is yet another proof of the Australia’s contradictory nature. They claim that they play the gentlemen’s game with a healthy attitude and they exposed their rotten attitude to the world during the last match, which obviously didn’t catch the eye of ICC. Claiming wickets which everybody knew were not theirs, refusing to leave when they are obviously out, provoking a player and crying ‘foul’ (read ‘RACISM’) over the reaction of the ‘black’! (Read ‘Harbhajjan Singh’), calling themselves the best team in all manner (What?!)…… Who are they kidding?

Unlike our Tendulkar and Dravid the Australia are known to stand their ground until declared out by the umpire but what Clarke did was too much. None of them showed remorse for the way they took Dravid’s wicket. Gilchrist and Ponting never flinched. How mean! They call this ‘spirit’?

The Symonds-Harbhajjan incident wouldn’t have been more than an exchange of a few words (one: “mind your job, okay?” The other: “You mind your job, okay?”) But Ponting raised the racism issue (note that it was him who started the issue in India instead of the ‘victim’). India and Indians have nothing to do with racism. Of course we are prejudiced in the basis of caste, religion and financial status but colour? No! We come under the ‘victims’ section. We’re being bullied for ages. But the Australians are notorious racists. They’re doing dirty politics with Buckner and Benson in their socks and the ICC in their pockets. No decent person/team would’ve wanted the sort of victory they had.

I’m proud of our men. Look at they way they carry themselves. Sometimes I feel like, “Come back men! You’re not so mean to play with them. They may win lots of trophies (who knows how many of them are honest victories). But they can never be equal to you”
But then let them play their honest, decent cricket. The victory doesn’t matter. We know that ours is the best team in the whole world integrity wise. Let’s prove it again.
Go India, go!

Movie name: Saawariya

Genre: Musicals

Actor/ Actresses: Randir Kapoor, Sonam Kapoor, Salman Khan, Rani Mukherjee

Review:
I haven't seen the movie yet. Considering my friends' comments I'm scared to go. What if I hate it? Inspite of it being Bhansali's I fell in love with it for the music. It seems that it is the usual Bhansali film. Lovely music, amazing ads, good looking actors, gorgeous sets and the same old "mokkai" story. Geez! I'm in two minds. Help me out. Should I watch the movie or shouldn't I?
