The reservation policy fails to achieve its purpose of giving equal opportunities to everyone mainly because a significant proportion of the backward classes, which lives in the rural areas, never really uses the policy. Only a small proportion of people enjoy the benefits of it.

The policy is damaging the indian economy, where merit isn't the only factor that decides whether a bright student gets admission in an institution he deserves or whether a qualified person gets a good job.

The reservation policy was re-initiated during VP Singh govt's regime, though his Govt faced a severe backlash from majority of people,, he still went ahead with it only to garner votes from the backward classes and those who were to benefit from it.
