Close encounters with astrology:
Since retirement I had nothing to do, so I thought I will open a small office at home and tell future of people by reading horoscopes. I went to book stall and bought some thick books and kept them in prominent place in sitting room. Next thing I put up a big signboard saying Dr Telang, Astrologer. Dr was from my medical degree but how people were to now that.
Then I waited near the phone to ring, but bloody phone did not oblige for days. I don’t know on what bad time I had it installed. But my mrs intervened by saying : you have decided to change carrier so go and immediately consult an astrologer whether your stars are favourable and you will succeed in it.
It was like the order of commander in chief, so first thing I went through morning paper and oh my there it was. In a small column it said Swami Jyotishanand, only on Sunday and Friday between 9 am to 9 pm. He was renowned astrologer who had university degree from Bihar in astrology, and predicted future to chief minister, dy chief minister, my area corporator and local goonda correctly. Today was Friday so I dressed, took my horoscope and started immediately. Just down the stairs I met my neighbour who asked where are you going? On hearing I am going to a astrologer to show my horoscope he immediately went in his apartment and brought a copy of his horoscope and gave it to me, saying please show it also to revered swamiji since I was going to meet him. O k I said, how can we say no to neighbours, they are helpful at odd times.
First of all I had to pay rs 500 as down payment at the counter and waited in que. Then after few plates of food passed in and out of cabin my turn came.
Swamiji was sitting in high chair and took a close look at me. I was taken back by swamijis personality, his ornaments, photos of certificates around that I immediately put my hand in the pocket and gave him the horoscope.
Swamiji studies the hoscpope with apt concentration and I was looking anxiously at his face. Then he tinkered with his computer and said : I have downloaded your horoscope and folded the book and I put it back in pocket.
Swamiji stared at computer now. Then he looked up and looked grave. Very bad he said ultimately your stars are very bad, Saturn is powerful and for 7 and half years it will remain bad for you. You are going to loose your job and will be unemployed till today. I was retired so I thought may be what he said that I had no job was correct and I nodded. Swamiji was pleased, but don’t be afraid he said, if you will do yadnya with lunch for 10 brahmins and pay 1000 rupees each your Saturn will affect you less. It will only cost you only 25000. o k I said.
Then again he looked at horoscope stared at it for some time. you have two children two sons he said. no I said I have one son and one daughter well may be the asteroid chiron is coming in the way said the great astrologer, otherwise you should have one daughter and one son, we both nodded.
Venus and sun are very near to each other so you will meet with accident in next 48 hours . But don’t worry he said go to Sun temple just next corner and give 1000 to the priest. O k I said, what is 1000 rupees for prevention of accidents.
But sir I want to start small astrology business, I stammered. No no said the famous astrologer, Neptune is with Pluto so you will fail badly. Do something else like, medical practice. O k I said meekly.
Then after going to temple I returned home and my wife was waiting with grave face: your neighbour jayant met with serious accident while going for job interview on a scooter. His both sons have rushed him to Bombay hospital. I didn’t know he had lost job recently. Then shocked I put my hand in pocket and alas I had shown my neighbours horoscope to Swamiji instead of mine
