 I swear!

I wouldn't want to be caught dead singing the terrible All 4 One track!

A survey at a Norwich University suggests that it's good to swear at workplace! Apparently, using cuss words at workplace relieves stress and increases bonding among the team. So, no more 'Language, Timothy!'? Wow!

Umm, ya, maybe sometimes abusing does relieve stress. But then imagine to have to hear only cuss words. Dunno how it works in corporates, but the media houses I have worked in, it was anyway always been very casual. We would walk in wearing dirty jeans, T-shirts, uncombed hair and chappals when we didn't have a press conference to attend or an interview to do. And, oh yeah, some nice abusing would happen over the innumerable rounds of chai and sutta.

The MD of my first company was a suave man and even if he said something like, "It's all crap," he'd add an apologetic, 'Pardon my French'. But, yeah, it did ease the tension a bit. My then editor had used the f**k and s**t a few times and he didn't mind it at all. The editor of the second daily I was with used such words in the editorial meetings but hollering them in the newsroom was nothing short of a crime! I'm glad it was because when you had crazy deadlines and ads dropping the last minute with the page to fill, tempers did fly high! And people used some nasty words. One of my very sweet colleagues was reduced to tears once, when a highly volatile and scumbag of a reporter abused her in front of 50 odd deskies and writers in the newsroom!

Honestly, I think it depends on your intonation a lot. Like, when someone pulled the other's leg, we gave a very fond "you b**ch and a half". But once a reporter said something nasty to me at an event and I didn't take too kindly to it, when she walked away, I said to my friend, "What a b**ch!", little realising she was in the hearing range. She immediatley came up to me an apologised for being rude.

The place also makes a difference. Like, I never abused in office. But at parties I have used cuss words even when my ediotorial manger has been around - he used to do it too... and worse still choicest Hindi gaalis.

But then, no abusing in a board meeting or getting personal with someone. Saying 'WTF!' when your pc hangs when you are doing something important is ok I guess. Or even 'Let's crack the f***in deal' to motivate would be alright too.

However, imagine this...

Boss: Can I have that report by evening?
Employee: F**k you! *showing the middle finger for effect* Guess who just heard from us - Naukri.com!

depends a lot on the culture of the organization , or the lack of it...moreover, some people take this very personally and some people dont mind it all...so just be careful who is around when you swear!
