The shy girl of the 80's...

1989.
When the incident happened this young girl was just over 20 years old. She was married 6 months and traveling alone from Madurai (a medium sized town in South Tamil Nadu) to her native village in a public transport bus. It was dusky evening and the bus was a bit dark. One guy, probably in his early thirties, from behind her seat tried to poke his foot through the seat gap. She let go once and twice. Third time, she got up, turned around and grabbed the guy by his collar. “Don’t you have sisters or mother? Are born to a pig? You people won’t allow women to travel alone in peace? Go and fiddle with your sisters or aunties at home. Don’t ever dare to try your dirty tricks with girls like me. Can’t you see I have a Mangal-Sutra around my neck? You filthy Pig?”

The guy was breathlessly shocked and totally shaken. The bus stopped and all passengers congratulated her for her bravery and for setting examples to the younger generations. He got down in the next station and never looked back.

Here I have to say about this girl a little more…

She grew up like no less than a princess during childhood. She had three maternal uncles (mamaas) and 2 maternal aunties (Chithies), and they were all living in Ceylon. She used to go there for every year holidays. She traveled alone in those days’ ships, as pet to every passenger and ship’s crew and lived as captain’s girl. Once when she was traveling to India, the ship was approaching the shore and the Captain of the ship offered to her that he would radio to the shore and find out who has come to receive her, with a condition that she gives him a kiss. She out rightly refused and said, ‘I don’t want to know who has come’. That’s how shy she was when she was a young child.

I asked her later, “From where all the courage came to you to grab that guy by collar”.
She said she didn’t know, it just happened.
I knew exactly from where she got that courage.

When she got married, she moved to Bombay with her husband within 10 days of marriage. When she entered the house, there was barely anything, except a bucket in the bath room, a camp-cot, a small vessel for boiling tea, and a small music system. A typical bachelor’s den. Then she and her husband started their new life there in Bombay, all by themselves. Nobody known to them was there to help them. She took her life in her hands, she went to market, ration shop to buy kerosene (those days applying for gas connection was so tough and long drawn thing), bank, groceries, everywhere on her own.

Bombay is one and only city I know of, that transforms a rabbit into a tiger. Survival of the fittest and toughest. That’s the magic of Bombay. It transformed this young timid shy girl too into a Smitha Patil. And it showed when she traveled to her native place for next vacation.
That’s when the incident I said above happened.

Do I have to say who was this girl?

My Salutes to her and,
All the brave women in the world,
Who make things happen,
Who take life in their hands...!!!

HAPPY WOMEN'S DAY TO ALL LOVELY LADIES I KNOW...

Dear Raja ji...Convey my best wishes to the brave woman Mrs. Rajataurus.
Yes...necessity is the mother of invention.
Necessity makes one to learn many things to face the life's challenges.
Thanks for showing respect on woman.
We women are thirsty of this respect.
