Saluting Women: The story of my Aunt

This is a post meant to honor all the courageous woman who have fought life and its other variants.

Today , I would like to tell you a story about my aunt. One of the most fiery, courageous and tenacious lady I have seen.

Her story starts way back in late 1960s when she got married to my Uncle at the young age of 18.My Uncle was a pilot in Indian Airforce and it was a lovely life for them. In 1971, my uncle died in an aircrash during a training session near Pune.
My aunt, who was then mother of 2 children. Two girls, aged 2 and 1. And mind you, it was 1970s and things were not as free for a woman as they are now.Back in her hometown Lucknow she felt helpless from all sides.Lack of support from her late husband's family and her brothers ( one of them being my dad) were quite young to support her.Emotionally and in lot of other ways she got support from my grandfather and relatives, but at the end, the fight was her own.

She managed to get a job in bank as a clerk and made sure that her daughters get the best education. After few years, she sent them to Welham Girls School in Dehradun which is among the best schools in India. It was tough for her to pay the fees but she managed to meet ends.

The life went on and I was very close to her while I was growing up. in 1986 she got Indian Oil gas agency via Armed Forces quota and life changed a bit. My dad quit his busines to join her since managing such a volatile business is very tough for a woman.

About my sisters, they were my guides. I cant express here what I learnt from them. They were much ahead of their times and guided me as i grew up.

Today, one of my sisters is an IPS Officer and serving the country in Intelligence Bureau. The younger sister is an entrepreneur and has been featured in magazines like Femina few times .Both of them are happily married and still make difference in the lives of people around them.
As for my aunt, she is a very active lady in politics and has been the Chief of Ladies wing in UP of Congress Party.

When I  try to imagine the state of her mind, a lady , 21 years old, on her own and 2 infant daughters to take care of and when I see her today, I know she has come a long long way....and i just bow my head in salutation to her.

Three cheers for the species called Women!!!
