 An ode to women

Women from all walks of life have indeed changed the life of men, for better. But many of us write about it only on this day. And forget all about it for the rest of the year. I really envy women, especially on this day. Just look at all the adulation they get. They deserve it no doubt but I wish there was a man’s day too. Over the years, so much has been already written about Women and their role in the lives of men, that I didn’t know what more I can add. And then I looked back at my life and realized that many things I know or have excelled in, I have learnt from a woman, my mother. Yes, my mother was a great human being. And she has changed my life and made me a man, that I am today.

My father and mother were a part of a joint family, in which men were given priority over women. In fact women were treated like second fiddles in all walks of life. Their opinion did not count; their feelings were ignored, making them go through life as just another poor soul. My mother suffered hell under the reign of her mother in law, (that is another woman again!) and soon the inevitable happened. My father and mother shifted home, to another place, in a city away from the earlier one. My father was still under the spell of all that he had left behind but soon, my mother exercised control at home. She told him very frankly, that she considered her daughter equal to her son, that’s me. And that she would have all the work, at home and out of it, shared between me and my sister. He was taken aback first, then realized the importance of such a stance. And agreed with her! And so I began doing chores at home and in the course, learnt many things that only girls would know how to do! Like cooking, cleaning and managing a home. Thanks to my mother, I can cook chapattis, sabji, daal, chutney among many other delicacies. My mother taught me, that man and woman are equal.

But how many mothers practice equality at home is a question that nags me. Over the years I was under the impression that only women from the lower income group treat their daughters inferior to their sons. It is not so. Women from well to do families also indulge in it. I see many mothers giving inferior treatment to their daughters. Agreed, they encourage their daughters to learn, get a degree but at the same time they expect them to know cooking, sowing, cleaning and what not. So on the artificial level, they want to see their daughter to be educated and self sufficient but they can’t let go of the fact that she is a woman and so must know all that homely stuff. I ask why only the daughter should know all this. Why not the son too? So to liberate women, the process must begin at home, rather, every home.

How much ever I would love to end this piece on a happy note, I can’t wait to shed light on a startling fact. A recent survey revealed that women from the so-called middle class are increasingly indulging in feticide! Can you believe this? They are killing their own daughters, before they can be formed, leave alone be born.

But I take heart at the thought that some day, this will change. The women will realize that they are not only biologically superior to men but physically and mentally also more stronger.

Honest writeup this. Sexual Inequality is not only an attribute of the poor.. as you have so rightly observed.

A life passes by unlived.. unnoticed... unmourned....

And all too often...

Cheers,

Dagny

According to our scriptures, when a man takes the holy order of Sanyas, even his father has to bow before him. However the sage still has to bow down before his mother.
In another instance, a pious man was pressing his mother's leg while God was knocking at his door. However he continued the job and ignored the knocking.
Womanhood has always been celebrated in our tradition - especially in the form of the mother.
I have observed certain women who have been pivotal to their husband's reaching great heights. The sacrificial qualities of a woman are not debasing but that is what makes them noble.

Thanks for your comment, I appreciate. But the Women must take the initiative to come forward and improve the living conditions of other, less priviledged women...

Socially, educationally and economically backwardness dragged the women back. To remove these three things, the women will be superpower of the world.
