 All men are not gentlemen

Well I was a bold and bindhas bombay girl.I knew how to take care of myself on the streets of mumbai, and in the offices and in other public places.Thats because mumbai has tamed and civilized its males to the extent that they usually dont bother with any females walking with a big purse( to take onions and potatoes on the way back home, and a lunch box, and other stuff to office.)

Maybe they tease college girls outside of the colleges ,or on lonely beaches after dark, or in Borivili national park, but if you go there in large numbers they wont even tease you there. However if you really want to go in a danger zone I guess you must go to office areas near ballard pier, or gateway of India, or colaba etc. after office hours. Then a large number of cars will stop in quick succession and ask if you want a ride. You never want that ride ever, girls , unless of course thats your profession.

So whenever I went to Delhi, or for that matter anywhere else in north, I felt a bit queer. The men over there are more virile I guess, or more robust ,and they will never leave a single opportunity of eve teasing,or touching, pinching and or making other obnoxious unwelcome advances.

The ladies compartment in many of those trains will be totally packed with men.If you tell them to get off they will inform you "Madam, agle station par aapki shadi laga denge."

There are more of these impossible  rude men, than nice and kind gentlemen, and no wonder women in some parts of India still dont feel safe till they have a man walking alongside them. They even wear the ghungta , have a pallo, or wear the burkha to ward off evil eyes. And they dont go out to work either.

I had my own brush with one of the savage lustful males on one such journey .It was evening time and I was enjoying a stroll down the hill to visit the mall. Suddenly a tall lanky guy in sweatshirt and a green bandana and really long hair came from behind me and pinched me.

I was furious.Without thinking twice,I just slapped his face." There, that will teach him a lesson". I thought. But it was not end of story. He grabbed me, turned me around and kicked my bottoms. I was more than mad.I bit his hand with all my  might ...and then I saw his savage bloodshot eyes.

There was something mean and scary about his face. He was not a tame middle class working man rushing about on the streets of Mumbai.I felt helpless for the first time in my life.
He was an animal. And he was planning revenge.

At that point my survivor instinct took over. My hormones of fight or flight uttered the  word  "FLIGHT" in all caps. I freed myself from that savage and began to run.I ran as fast as my legs could carry me.I heard a wild loud laugh behind me, but  did not turn to look back. I am sure that my quick sprint would have broken all world records.

I ran all the way back to my room and locked the door. Then I drew the cutains and got between the sheets and drew them over my head to hide myself. Next day I almost expected to see the savage lurking around the corner, and did not go out anymore.Once the conference was over I just came back home to safe and civilized Mumbai. The lesson I learnt from that trip was no man is a gentleman unless he proves otherwise. Needless to say I began to notice the evil eyes of savages long before they came anywhere close to me.

Hi Sonikudi

Thanks for sharing this. Was a great realistic account of this season. Yes the title is apt. But there's also another tribe--Non gentleman in gentleman's garb to be of careful:)

how come in country, we tend to blame the victim..oh u got raped?? u should have worn some "decent" clothes!! you got shot with bullet in ur ass??? u shud have worn steel underpants!! what th e fuck ever happened to looking at whose fault it really was...a sexually repressed(a lot of males in our country) morally inadequate and very insecure when it comes to his "manhood" piece of crap of life...!!but we would rather let that be...sexually repress people..and blame the victim for letting the vermin "stumble" on them..they pinch guys on the train...now some one would like to blame me and call me a homophobe perhaps???

she could be right too. that was the penultimate sentence. not the conclusion...

disposable 'evil-eye' contact lenses (men dont make passes at girls who wear glasses!} with 'savage'-sensors can account for this foresight ...another goodie for gals!
