Chicks with Balls!
This is a tiny incident among the absolutely zillions of girl teasing incidents in the world albeit one that left a pretty profound impression on me. Happened in 1993 when I was doing my SSC. Please allow me to share with you...
St. Blaise's was a pretty neat school. It was a co-ed and had an overall decent crowd of kids coming over every day for studies, time pass, and more. There were some who came for PT (physical training) too but who cares about them anyways, right?
Anyways, so blame it on adolescent hormones or raging teenage fashion statements: it was like a “cool thing” to hang out with girls. We had a nice little group of 6 boys and we’d proud ourselves on the fact that the most happening girls in school were pretty friendly with all of us. The girl-teasing incident occurred with one of these girls, Sapna.
Sapna was one of the most confident girls I’d ever seen. She was beautiful, rich, and had tonnes of attitude and was probably the first person I knew with Michael Jackson’s Dangerous CD before the damn thing had even been aired on the then recently launched music channels! In short, Sapna was, pardon my French ladies and gentlemen, babe material from the word go.

So there we are having mudh-golas (crushed ice topped with nakli honey and cheap kalakhata colours) outside school, Sapna and all 6 of us. She’d missed her bus or something and was hanging out with us till the next one came.
Three guys from school stood around us; cracking jokes that make young people in school standing with young girls, cringe.
Let me tell you a bit about these guys. These boys, no… make that men, should have been dads by that time but had flunked enough classes to still be in school. They were big, cruel and looked meaner than the worst teachers. These are the kids your parents DON”T want you to become. The “bad company” folks warn you about.
They started jostling each other and before we knew it two of them had pushed Sapna and had, in the process fallen over her. Though it was over in a matter of a minute I’m sure they had groped the girl. Just that no one, especially us, wants to notice such things. We were busy giving Sapna a hand getting up, each one mentally cursing himself for being a wimp in the most real, bitter and suffocating sense of the word. The guys were laughing aloud, hi-5s going around the pack of these absolutely ugly monsters in school uniforms.
What Sapna did next is one of the most bravest things I’ve seen a woman do in my life. She picked up the bucket of ice water from the golawalla and poured it over the nearest culprit. The other two ran away!
It was insane I’d never seen any thing like that. I’d thought they’d murder her, being the scummy gangster types they were. The drenched guy started arguing and Sapna argued back, calling him the choicest of abuses in hippest and coolest bad words. The dumb cretin didn’t know what most of it meant. Perhaps a result of all those years wasted with education.
Her bus came soon after and she left. So did we. But this thing didn’t leave me. Till date. I’m amazed at just how vividly I remember all of this. The amazing thing was she didn’t begrudge us our cowardice. Just said something on the lines of “Taught the F*****S a good lesson!” and left us with a casual “See you tomorrow!” I was floored and still am.
Respect to Sapna and to women like Sapna who live through this world dealing with all the anguished lust attacks from the male faction, the most repressed specimen you’ll ever find anywhere. Brave women rock!
PS: This was cathartic. I should do this more often.
