 Oops! Dubya does it again...

Bushisms... They just don't cease to be. Anyway, Bush isn't considered amongst the brightest crayons in the box, really, and then he says things that irk people even more. The latest one being his remark about food crisis and how India and other developing countries are responsible. He and before him Condoleeza Rice have upset quite a few apple carts with the remark.

Somehow, though, I think Bush wasn't 'blaming' India or other developing countries for the food prices shooting up and didn't even mean that we should start starving or something. He did say that it was good that these countries are developing fast because that means more opportunities for exporters. He just said what he thought was a fact, and looks like that is the problem. He shouldn't think. I doubt he knows anything about economy and turns out he has only taken the superficial population problem into consideration.

I guess more important issue here is not how many people are eating but how much are people eating. Even though, as Dubya says, that 350 million middle class Indians are more than the entire peopulation of the US, the total foodgrain consumption per person in the US is over five times that of an Indian. So, which country is eating more?

Some more facts:

Each Indian consumes about 178 kgs of grain in a year, while a US citizen eats 1,046 kgs.

Annual grain consumption in the US is increasing. In 2003, grain consumption was 946 kg per year which increased to 1046 kg in 2007. But, India’s consumption has remained static over the same period.

Milk consumption is 78 kg per year for each person in the US, compared to 36 kg in India and 11 kg in China.

Vegetable oils consumption - 41 kg per person, per year in US, 11 kg per person in India while Indians are making do with just 11 kg per year.

Dubya sure has some food for thought here!
