Happens when the leash is lost...

 Mom

Who is it that said the 'sweetest sound to everyone's ear is the sound of their own name'? I donot remember, but whoever said it, said right or so I thought until a little voice called me 'm-o-m-m-y'. From then on that has become the sweetest sound to my ears.  The initial 'ma ma' gave way to 'mommy' to 'mom' and now at seven years master saz goes 'hey mom!' Oh well. Trust me, it is still sweet when I hear that, just as it was the first moment he uttered it.

Would not be an understatement I suppose if I said, the mere tone in the delivery of the 'mom' by my offsprings has the force, the power to catapult me into a roller coaster of emotions. The elation when it is 'MOM - I did it'(when he made it into the cross country track finals which actually is three laps around the school playground-despite the fancy name) to when I have to catch my heart in my throat when I hear, 'MOM dont get mad at me buuuuuutt'... when he attempted to use the kitchen knife to work throught the knot in his shoe laces!  Less said about the night time calls for 'mom', the better.  Especially if the tone is lacking the usual exuberance and tinged with hoarsness from sleep as well a nasty cold.

And the princess is not far behind either when it comes to 'mommy'ying me. 'MOM' you can do it-when I am huffing and puffing on an incline of 9 on the treadmill or when I am about to give up on my situps after hardly six repetitions. This from a barely there two and half year old!  Oh! I am much humbled when this little one chides me - MOM, I am mad at you.(because I try to feed her healthy stuff and the food goes for a toss -splat! on my face) I feel more down than when my favorite puppy died when I was a kid, when my own kid says 'mommy, me saddie'. and 'pray why little princess?& I ask, and she goes coz her bro went to khool(school). I guess I am not much of a company, so to speak.

More often than just once every couple of days I am hit with the enormity of the responsibilty involved in wearing this crown or would you call it a holy grail? - that of 'mom'. That I have just one chance to do it right is not much help to quell the rising fears. But there is reassurance, when I get a paper flower made in craft class with as neat a writing as a seven year old can manage-the words that are made to pop out with the liberal use of glitter and spangles 'mom! you are my sunshine'.  I am still grinning ear to ear at the thought of that flower, now stay put on the most honored spot in the house- on the fridge-held in place with a magnet.

Imagine my glee when I happened to eavesdrop on a sonny and daddy conversation the other night-'dad! for mothers day, can we go to my favorite burger joint?' and dad goes, 'hmmm would it not be nicer if we let mom choose the place to go, than you imposing?' and pat comes the reply from sonny,' oh! I am sure she wont mind. Besides, she likes what I like'.  So for Mother's day on May 11th folks I will be chomping down another one of those calorie enriched burgers with my 'mommy' callers and the dude that made it all possible.

'mom' 'mom' 'mom' oh! Thats my dotty! Pardon me folks but I have to cut this write up short and sprint to check on her.

HAPPY MOTHERS DAY FOLKS! Remember to utter the sweet words to your moms, but not just on May 11.

If i tell my mom, that it is a mother's day. she will be like, "what???, why???" she is a conventional traditional good ol mom, who hardly cares for any such things.
On the very same day my sis buday falls, i had a hard timing finding a card for her, entire gallery was full of mom stuff, which my mom will definitely throw in dustbin.
On the day i heard Metallica's "mama said" and "hero of the day", both present a different perspective of mother's love.
