Three cases against M F Hussain quashed. Good for freedom of expression?

>> Click here to view original post

Oh, hey, honestly I never thought that the cases against M F Hussain would ever be quashed. I'm glad Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul saw sense that obscenity is just a matter of perspective.

As for hurting the sentiments for painting Bharat Mata and Goddess Saraswati nude, like yoo hoo? remember Khajuraho which has temples replete with erotic carvings, even those in 'compromising positions'?

(A random thought... One of the meanings of these erotic cravings is that one should leave carnal desires outside while entering the temple. Dude, you show someone such arousing things and then expect them to forget about it in a split second?)

Apart from the above mentioned, another reason, apparently, is that divinity is pure like the the soul, so it's not affected by sexual desires and other characteristics of the physical body. And we have Shiv ling also, right? Like, one of the meanings it has is the phallus, if I'm not wrong. So why do things shock us so much? Ohhhhh, is it because it's a Goddess and not God? Gender bias, is it? Well, I guess had M F Hussain painted a God nude, he would have been called gay or something. Just another random thought this.

Anyway, so this verdict is reason for artists to rejoice I think, since Mr Justice has also said that "frivolous and vexatious complaints, which impinge on the basic freedom of an individual, should be scrutinised in a strict manner at the magisterial level itself."

All these complaints are courtesy the jobless and stupid fundamentalists at work. More annoying is all the ransacking these hooligans go about doing. Ya, ok, you have a problem? Just say it and maybe the artist will comply if he knows he has hurt the sentiments, like M F Hussain did.

Well thats a nice post and I agree fully with the "freedom of expression" thing .Frankly what I feel is that somethings should be left to themselves and not made into a big issue. All this stuff is just to instigate trouble in an allready troubled society.Hussain I am sure did not mean to insult. And as you say Hussain did appologise. All these issues should be left to die their own death.

Dhaval,

This opens a hornet's nest as far as I am concerned. Let take this 'individual freedom' thing a mite further.

If I want to expose in public and you try to stop me... I can scream bloody murder... no? or if I want to make freehand graphic drawings on a public wall... will you let me...?

I dont know about this 'freedom of expression' thing Dhaval. Seems too much controversy here.

I can of course give as strong arguments in favor. Like... so ok... I outraged your sensibilities... so then dont look at the stuff I produce... Its not like I'm throwing it in your face... Or pushing lighted candles between your toes to make to see it...

Phew...

Cheers,

Dagny

PS: Explain this whole thing wont you? I am totally clueless.

I can see the rejoicing in your blog on the respect given to 'freedom of expression'. Great victory to MFH over the fundamenalists.

When you see any work of art, a painting, a carving, the creator wants you to see something - to feel something - to get a message.

Well, by painting Saraswati or Bharatmata nude, - what MFH wanted to convey to the art-reveller anyways...!!!
Here what was his message? What he wanted one to see or feel?

Of course, if he painted Shiva or Vishnu nude, he would have wanted to convey his 'gay'ish feelings or perspective of Gods?

Nudism is just a form of art. But, to take a particular belief and making a mockery of it, is not art.. Call it Freedom of expression or Freedom of individual, it is not in the right taste from the person who created it. He is not living alone in this planet. He is just another social animal like billions of others here.
His art is just another form of getting cheap popularity... no less than porno-pics.
