 POLITICALLY CORRECT- What does it imply - (part 2)

Politically correct is used to describe language, ideas, policies, or behavior that promotes minimum offense to racial, cultural, or other identity groups. The term dates back to Mao's little red book and was later adopted by the radical left in the 1960s. The term "political correctness" is derived from vocabulary of the left and was used to describe the appropriate "party line" or the “correct line". Those not toeing the "correct line" were often punished.

Decent (non-offensive) language and behavior are the products of ones attitude, prejudices and many other compulsions. In absence of real conviction good language may be used (under peer pressure) but will not be backed by consonant behavior. The end result being a mere lip service to decency ….. as evident by numerous incidences in our own country.

Politics is defined as the art of the possible. It is quite likely that this ends up as a tool for control of open thought and its subsequent dispersal and transmission. Political correctness endangers free speech at all levels especially in academic and political forums. In a democratic set up who has the right to decide what is correct to think and say.

The politics of not upsetting anyone, demands that all must accept the notions of the Politically Correct as truth, or ……. The same mentality inspired the Inquisition, Galileo’s persecution and the Nazis. When free expression gets placed in a straitjacket of official truth, a totalitarian state is the result. All life is in a state of suspended animation where terror rules.

The book “Fahrenheit 450” describes a society that became sterile and docile because written matter that offended anyone was not published and the society did not accept it. The move towards political correctness perpetuated intellectual stagnation in the society. This resulted in a state where very few ruled the majority.

Freedom is never more than one generation away from extinction. We didn't pass it to our children in the bloodstream. It must be fought for, protected, and handed on for them to do the same, or one day we will spend our sunset years telling our children and our children's children what it was once like in the United States where men were free (Ronald Reagan, President, USA).

The risky and potentially dangerous frivolities of language should not be allowed to distract us from the more important issues that require instant attention.

The implications are grave; however, not to get trapped in such political avariciousness is solely up to us.

I am fully committed to decent speech and behavior. It is the exploitation of my decency that I am not ready to accept.

Though we would not want a sterile and docile society which would have to watch every word one says...i would not like to see anyone hurt....as the line inbetween is very thin..and people often take advantage...black person would not like to be called a nigger....just like I would hate to be called weaker sex or coloured for that matter..

But then again,there are very few stuff that can come unscathed after a close scrutity and 'political correctness' is no exception.

At one extreme we have age old children's stories/tales going thru a revamp in the name of wanting to be absolutely 'poltically correct'-thereby probably planting the seed at a very early age and on the other hand we have even people in high places going public with crass apartheid spewing language..

I suppose,as is always the case,there is an untold caveat-use your discretion.

In any democracy or for that matter in any form of Govt, the ruling agency or the party will try its level best to give the people a governance as per their policies and dictats ! and then they have to please the people also ! They have to strike a balance between these two!And how muh POLITICALLY CORRECT POLICIES are people oriented depends largely upon the strength of the mass !Means their awareness ! IN democracy you get he governance you deserve !! So the main point in our context is that as by and by our masses are more educated and get aware about importance of their vote power , the politically correct actions will be in their favour !

The biggest problem in the US is that people are very incompetent - they just follow the govt blindly. Incompetent people are the bane of a democracy. And for democracy to work - you need an educated populace. They have become very individualistic so to speak.

This is a very complicated subject because politicians have less power than corporates in the US. The blame usually goes to the politicians, but when you look at the bigger picture it's the corporates who rule the roost.

Most of them choose to be politically correct when they don't know about the situation in depth, but there are some who like to present themselves as saints just because they don't want to hurt anyone.

In life you need to have a philosophy if you don't stick to it you might as well consider dieing. You should be free to express your opinions and stand for your rights.

So you're saying it's possible political correctness could be used by those in power to oversensitize a population to such an extent that they start believeing that having any sort of negative opinion about anyone/thing is wrong and so they sort of dumb down. I mean 'if we might offend why bother thinking at all?' Thus people will stop interfering with the government and it's policies. Like a secret mass brain washing plan?

I thought that was a Western conspiracy theory, dumbing down of people? Textbooks were made simpler, academic exams were made easier etc all because people who don't ask questions make life easier for politicians. Might hold water. I doubt about it being a problem in India yet, here the fear and hopelessness factors are more than enough!
