 The strange world of mortals

When we Gods sit to talk about the mortal world and its cheating ways, one of the greatest subjects of conversation is the tendency of mortals to use comparisons and conflict to gain security. This obviously leads to a use of power to hurt people rather than empower self and others. No wonder they cannot comprehend the power of the Gods.

Put two mortals together, and the first question to arise seems to be "who follows whom?" and no, unlike Gods, "sometimes one or the other" doesn't qualify as an answer for mortals. And of course, there follows anxiety about the leader being insensitive to their rights and needs, and thus follows a saga of  pointless competition, envy, undermining and non-co-operation. You can see this no matter how many mortals are involved - be it husband and wife, a team in an office or two countries.

Another strange phenomenon in the mortal world is their inability to comprehend that people have different perspectives and needs. Therefore, a perspective that doesn't agree with theirs is urgently required to be destroyed, at any cost (sometimes the cost can be mortal lives). So, two siblings will rarely understand that they both have the same attachment with the ancestral property which they will visit maybe a couple of times a year, and living in a home doesn't require owning it. They will prefer to ensure that the home will always be available to them at the cost of the relationship, not realizing that strengthening the relationship might help them stay in the home as much as they like without even having to pay maintenance How do you think we Gods have so many temples? We just stay in them, no matter who owns them (and even manage to get paid for it by gullible mortals).

An even more bizarre phenomenon in the world of mortals is the tendency to create fantasies about what people/organizations/countries/etc are. Therefore, a person who does something they dislike is fantasized as a person incapable of doing anything they may like. I suspect this is to do with their inferior understanding that people can behave differently each time they do something. They say we Gods treat them like slaves, but really, its them looking at themselves as though their opinion was all that counted and their disapproval meant that the object of their disapproval was worthless.

This of course, is very good for our careers as Gods, as we get a whole load of respect for pointing out the obvious time and again.

So, any Gods reading it, you might want to enjoy the entertainment provided by mortals more.

Uh.... a true Freud would have managed to bring in aggression and sexuality into the mix, but hey, no point wringing brains here.

ASYLUM, tempted by your comment to go Freud on this subject.

It is basically about our unconscious desires. Most people associate power and superiority with security (an evolution from the survival instinct).

There are two ways of achieving that power. The first is that of the self-actualized individual, who is able to create his own individuality and assert his own needs - he knows this is all the power that is ever really needed. The other, is a way of being powerful, by putting others down, and thus being powerful enough to ensure that own needs are met. This creates insecurity when other needs are stated, because then the person has no means of assuring that his own will not be overlooked.

Its basically how we see power - is it in terms of capability to do what we need to, or is it about being stronger than the others. The second is a rat race with no real peace of mind, as the "others" aren't going to be dominated, or may be participants of that race themselves

ASYLUM, I think why we do things is not as important as what we do, what we hope to achieve from them and how we go about doing them.

Reasons can be found for anything - Freud made a life out of searching for these. However, postmortems help understanding for future reference. What matters is our actions, our intentions and their impact on the people we are interacting with. Awareness of these will help what is happening in the here and now.

The world can't change until it stops filing away information for future action and power through interpretation of another (which may also be entirely wrong).

Therefore, I will not comment on the why of it.

The Goddess enjoys her free entertainment, but there's also space on the divine club for more and more self-actualized individuals. Looks like you've filled in the entry form

I shan't praise this analysis as words fall weak. Goddess, do you think mortals think in such a way because of sheer stupidity? or is there a silent pandemic of egomania where mortals assume that all they do is right and all they have known and believed in, is the whole, perfect, eternal truth and that anyone who happens to be/see/feel/think differently, deserves 'less in life' as compared to what they expect/hope/wish for themselves? *sigh*

Either ways, expecting mortals to change is next to impossible. Most mortal minds are like permanently clogged drains. As you've said, you might as well enjoy the free entertainment!
