Why Beijing Olympics starts on 8.8.2008?

Dear friends,

                      You may be all aware and know that Beijing Olympics the worlds premiere sports event gets underway today the 8.8.2008. All sports maps will lead to Beijing where all sports lovers from all over the globe will converge to have a glimpse of the opening gala ceremonies. Many will stay on to witness the sports events participated by the world'stop atheletes vying with each other to take home the coveted medal.

                     What is the beauty of the current olympics is the symmetrical date chosen for the start of the global sports event. The preparations have been going on for the last six years or so for staging the latest olympics in China. It never occurred to me to check on the date chosen to open until yesterday. All i had in mind all these years was that Indian steel making companies stood to gain from Beijing Olympics as requirements for new bridges ensured better demand and price realisation for indian steel companies including TATA STEELS boosting their bottomlines. As I dug into the reason behind the date chosen for the current olympics, a surprising story unfolded.

                      The choosing of 8 th AUGUST 2008 is a contradictory of sorts as China is known as a communist country. Communism stands for rationality and superstitions take a back seat. Yet, the chinese culture is steeped in superstition with number eight is considered to be the most celebrated number as per chinese numerology. It is none other than the Beijing mayor who opted for this date. In cantonese eight spells "baat" sounding very like the word for prosperity "faat" which connotes all things lucky. Perhaps the Mayor wished China to emerge victorious in medals tally by assigning a luckiest date in Chinese culture.

                      Apart from the foregoing, the chinese have already emerged as a major force in world's sports arena owing to their meticulous preparations for the sports events.

                     The chinese economy is already booming with liberalisation policies and BEIJING OLLYMPICS may prove to be a windfall for the business community of China and Chinese americans in America. The Chinese atheletes may do China proud by their heroic medal winning deeds in BEIJING OLYMPICS.

                      I , as, an Indian is sad for Indians as their medal prospects remain clouded to this day and the lucky and exceptional individual atheletes scraping through with a medal. He/she will be the nation's instant celebrity. Who is going to be that if at all one is going to be. Let us wait.
