We want to break free from...
Every passing year I feel that the I Day celebrations are dwindling. This year there were no celebrations in my area - no flag hoisting, no blaring music... This is the only fest that I don't mind the blaring music since there are only patriotic songs and not 'beedi jalai le' kinds. Streets were empty, almost seemed like a curfew! A few of my friends admitted that they preferred staying indoors because cops would be too vigilant and they didn't want to get questioned unnecessarily just because they were driving around in a group. A great day for freedom, indeed! Not free to walk the streets without fear of being harrassed by cops for no rhyme or reason.
Anyway, so what do I think we need freedom from the most? There are a number of problems that are popping in my mine saying 'me, me, me!' all trying to get my attention as the most serious problem. They are all equally big problems - terrorism, communal hatred, corruption, discrimination, reservation, poverty, genocide, population, inflation, politicians... I could go on and on.
But I think the root of all that is our forgetfulness. Politicans forget nobility, they forget they are here to serve the public and not fill their coffers. People forget that we are a UNITED country. People forget what the divide and rule policy by the Raj did to us and we let the politicians do that again by spreading communal hatred. The admin forgets all the old lessons and mistakes, which is why there are repetivite deluges, terrorist attacks. The admin forgets that it's their responsibility to look after people; why do people have to take care of themselves after a calamity instead of the admin stepping in? Yes, we have a strong spirit and we can stand right back on our own, thank you very much, but if we have to do everything, why are we paying you?
The judiciary forgets that justice delayed is justice denied, and then we feel grateful to the law when Jessica Lall's family gets justice after a decade! Judiciary forgets that there is something called equality, which is why biggies like Salman Khan, Sanjay Dutt, Shibu Soren go scot free in spite of committing crimes. Judiciary forgets to be fearless, which is why fundamentalists like Raj Thackeray and Bal Thackeray, VHP, Shiv Sena, MNS, Bajrang Dal can go rioting, calling bandhs and still not get arrested for it all because they have a clout and can create more damages.
And most importantly, we as a people forget that we must not turn a blind eye to all these problems. Why is it always someone else's burden to bear and not ours? We may be proud of India, but is India proud of us?
