Indian fests - breeding ground for the political pests.

When I was a kid I used to so love Gokulashtami and Ganeshotsav. Both the festivals were celebrated by visiting various Dahi handis and pandals respectively. The human pyramids, guys breaking matkis with their heads, but not before falling down a couple of times. During Ganeshotsav going to pandals till 12 am, especially those that had shows - Prahlad-Narsimh bhagwan, Sai Baba lighting diyas on Diwali with the little girl's tears.... stories that we had heard and seen hundreds of times but still every time the excitement was like we were seeing it for the first time! There used to be movies screened and live orchestra at a pandal near my house. And we went to all those!

And now... festivals are so badly politicized and nothing but about one upmanship that I can't rejoice even if I try when they are here. The night before last I actually grumbled, 'oh no, it's Gokulashtami tomorrow!' My friend thought it was another of my anti-religion sentiments showing up. But, then, yesterday he knew why I wasn't happy. Outside our office there were two stages erected. Left side was taken by Shiv Sena and the right one by BJP. Through the day there was a war of the political DJs spinning ghastly Bollywood numbers, as dirty as 'kantaa laga'. It was more like a political rally, with slogans being shouted, speeches being given... And there are no rules for the day. Guys wearing Shiv Sena, MNS or some politician's ugly face on the T shirts were riding three on a two wheeler, beer was being guzzled down and ALL right in front of the cops' eyes! Tens of guys driving around in jeeps, brandishing party flags, screaming and whistling at girls.

And then there will be Ganeshotsav, which will be an even bigger political tamasha. As if it isn't already. When it comes to religion, they are so blind to any reasoning. Shiv Sena wants to please the Marathi religious (illogical) sentiments, so the idol sizes won't be reduced. Seems like devotion is measured by the size, glamour and money spent on the idol and pandal and celebration.

Maybe it has always beeng a political gimmickry, since my younger days, but it wasn't as blatant and shameless as it is today. I really do care about God but I don't really care about religion. Having said that, I'm not disrespectful. But the way Indian festivals are becoming such an ugly affair, I don't feel like stepping inside the pandals anymore. Gimme the simple aarti at home any day, the way my ma does it!

I do agree with nova.. now a days dahi handi and ganesh utsav has become same as political rallys.. instead of screaming 'ganpati bappa moriya", they scream their political slogans,

last year i saw a ganapti murti sponsored by one of the local politician, the ganapati murti was of just two feet, but the banner of politician was of 20 feet... they think that they are bigger then god...

Aye you Solar! Tut tut... Don't spill my secrets on a public platform! Anyway I was thinking of setting a small temple for my god Jim Morrison - beer for charnamrit, joints for agarbatti, 'the end' for prayer...

Ya, KBR and Geet, we (family friends) used to all go out together and meet so many people we didn't get to see often. But it's just not the same any more! I used to like Durga Puja but last time I went to a puja organized by the Times of India and there they were screening people and letting only rich people inside. It's disgusting. I'm never going there again!

The Politicisation and commercialisation of religion and religious festivals has reached unparalleled heights in India. As geet and olive rightly pointed out one must worship and celebrate within for the external celebrations have lost their spirituality and sanctity and have turned into pandemonium and madness. One upmanship is currently the order of the day and even fropperites are not left out of this. Nice post.

i think we all agree on the same thing, that power, that fire, that nature,we call god is within us,i just pray at home, but as kb said, these festivals were brought for a certain reason, and we do miss them, but not like in the preasant way.luckily for me,in uk its not that bad,we do enjoy going out to temples sometimes as they are not too crowded places.and one can sit and relax and do manan too.nova, all i can do is invite u here so that u can enjoy the festive mood in the true sense.

care for God but not caring for religon! well said . in perfect agreement with my views.Festivals have become an occassion to showcase one's influence on the community.also note Olive's observation- that's what the hindu philosophy says. there is God within you and seek within.thanks for sharing.
