Nationality ; Indian. Caste : English Medium

I have long felt that in India , the ability to speak and communicate in English is not just another skill; it is also the membership to a caste. And then I saw an article in a newspaper a few months back that confirmed my thinking. It said that a sociological survey in Mumbai found that the percentage of intercaste marriages where both partners spoke English was three times that of intercaste marriages where only one partner spoke English. So here is a ray of hope that the caste system is not as immutable as it previously was and can indeed be overcome.

As kids , one of the way we described students from many other schools was” HMT”… which was not an abbreviation for the HMT watches already a household name in the 60’s and 70’s. HMT stood for “Hindi Medium Types”, a kind of a dismissive description for children who went to schools that were not ‘English medium”. This was the beginning of a brand new modern post-independence caste, but we had yet to see its full might. In subsequent years we have all seen innumerable and sometimes funny matrimonial advertisements for “convent educated” brides, (sometimes “convented” is the word used) . So here the new caste was invading matrimonial boundaries. We also saw new schools claiming to be “100 percent English medium”. This is rather like the Gurukuls of the olden days where admission was reserved only for Brahmins.

And now the sociological study from Mumbai; to me it confirms that the “English Medium” caste has arrived and is firmly in place.

While, for an Indian, being able to communicate in English is undoubtedly of tremendously great advantage, I have a feeling its not a completely unmixed blessing. To my mind, the English speaking Indians need to be aware of the following:

• We should not be dismissive of those Indians who cannot speak English. This is one reason why the English speaking Indian middle class can never understand the power of leaders like Lalu Prasad Yadav , Mayawati or Karunanidhi. Remember that in India the number of people who speak English is still less than 200 million. The remaining 800 million plus Indians speak a language other than English.
• The dominance of world politics for the last 200 or so years, first by great Britain and now by the USA, has made our own views too anglo-centric and narrow. We think the French and Italians are funny, because the English and Americans have told us that they are funny. We need to step out of this blind-spot and absorb good ideas and wisdom from other cultures.

Endpiece: have you noticed that a fairly noticeable number of profiles on networking/ friendship sites place a premium on “command over English” as a desirable quality for potential friends/ mates . So I asked some of my friends: would you like to make friends with a very nice man ..educated, good-looking, courteous, but one who did not know any English ? The answers varied from long hmmms and haws to a clear NO !!

generally what i feel that still english speaking or knowing english is considered well mannered and educated person in our society. We always get impressed with such person but its true also if one has fluency on other foreign language also. In the end dear..i have seen the start of friendship may require english in few cases but if friendship goes on...they forget about the language and understand the feelings behind the words and thats true for any relationship!!!

I had to come back to read your post again Ajay...
I do agree with all that you say, except the part about online 'friendships'. You wrote this post in English. I am commenting on it in English. As far as online networking is concerned, English is the prefered language of communication, so I see no harm in people prefering to communicate with others who speak English.
Just like 'Hotel California' wouldn't go down well during a temple aarti...

That's a nice blog indeed! I have gone through the turmolis of not knowing English language while in my teens too. Luckiliy for me, I had a friend who insisted that I speak in English, even if incorrectly and he would correct me. We would also see English movies, I read novels, short stories, thus improving my English. Thanks to him, I can now write English well. English is a useful language for communication and it's importance is well known. But that doesn't mean, people speaking other languages must be meted out an unfair treatment. Good blog!

Very thought provoking article,
What amuses me most are the interviews of ou HINDI FILM STARS,those who are earning their
Bread Butter(wrong HMT hun na),their Pata Nahin Kya Kya, by speaking Jhopad Patti Hindi or typical bambaia Bhasha in films , are not in a position to speak a complete sentence in hindi on stage or during their interviews,
This is nothing but the style, they feel is liked by the audience. The funniest part of it is some of them are qualified upto tenth std or so.Rakhi ji, Premchad ,Vimal Mitra or Sharat Chandra are un heard names for the new generation,"AI Mere Watan Ke Logo" no more brings water in their eyes,
"Jism ki bansi bajao ke naya daur hai ye,
Kath ki bansi bajana ho to gokul jao"
(Bas karen nahin to ek na padhne jaisa blog ban jayega,)

Yes,this gap between the HMT & the EMY does exist and we all are responsible for this.We should be grateful to the HMT for at least they are maintaining their identity and promoting their dialect.Have you ever heard statesmen or leaders of non english speaking countries addressing conventions and meets in English. No,they address the gathering in their national language for they take pride in that and their culture and expect the world to follow them.I am yet to hear an Indian statesman addressing such gatherings in Hindi, our national language.Certainly the EMT cadre does carry an complex problem over the HMT who are looked down upon.A very pathetic state, for this should not be an yard stick to evalueate any one.

Interesting as U point out the emergence of new caste.I agree dismisive attitude towards non english speaking is not good.Though as UR stas show the ratio in our country of English N other language speaking is 20:80, but ironically ,I read somwhere that the highest no. of people who can read, write, speak n understand english in world are Yankees, and Indians are no. two, beating Australians, Canadians, Brittons..in nummber.Perhaps large population contributing its share to numbers.
Thanx SAZZY, 4 sharing a nice post.

CONTIUED ..
and do not take the help of ENGLISH neither in the UNO nor in any business transactions.

So the plea that ENGLISH is a necessity does not hold much ground
BUT now that we have landed ourselves in such a mess lets think if any of our cultural heritage may be salvaged.
We should know that literature is not confined to Shakespeare Keats and Shelly but there have been kalidas and Premchand and Rabindranath Tagore too .
And in more recent times too Aurther Hailey and Sydney Sheldon ,Harold Robins[!] are not the people to be braggedd about There are better writers like Bhishma Sahni, Vrindawanlal Verma ,Sharatchandra etc
