 Flashbacks of a fool...

Does it happen to you that you are thinking of something out of the blue and it really happens? Like, you remember a song after years and then you hear it playing somewhere... Or you remember someone after ages and bump into him or her? Happens to me a lot of times!

A few days back I saw Flashbacks of a Fool. Good film, especially the two scenes that have Roxy Music's song 'If there is something...'. The song begins on a nice, mellow and happy note, but you don't even realize when the melody becomes melancholic, like the comedy and tragedy masks. Yesterday while listening to the song the only thought that kept raising its head was, "every day seems to be the same but soon everything's changed". My yesterday and today have been the same, nothing has changed. Same was the case with all consecutive days maybe 5 years ago, but when one looks back, so much has changed between the yesterday of 5 years back and today! The gradual transformation.

"Shake your hair girl with your ponytail
Takes me right back (when you were young)".

In the movie, the song plays in the climax, as a flashback moment. And right when I've been thinking about the bittersweet feeling called nostalgia, I meet a friend after five years. He had come down from Rajasthan, we went out for dinner and had our usual "oh, do you remember when we..." and "I never told you this, but..." moments.

We remembered a day when about 7 years back we sat on Worli Seaface reading self-composed poems to each other and it started raining, making us hop into a cab and driving away. Lasted barely 30 seconds but we were soaked!

He never told me this but a day after an office party where we both were quite tipsy and laughing (nothing remotely outrageous happened), the CEO of our company called him and said it was unprofessional behaviour, to which he replied, "Don't call us to a party again... we weren't behaving any differently from the MD or other people." I never told him this but the CEO had been acting funny with me that evening, trying to get too friendly and sweet. I obviously snubbed him.

He never told me that after hearing about Jim Morrison from me for the first time, he read up everything about him and actually started relating to rockers for being unbiased free spirits.

He seemed quieter to me. Much quieter than what I remembered him as. So, he says, "gradual transformation. I didn't realize when I became more pensive and serious. Life seems the same but a few years later when you look back, everything has changed so much." That's the second coincidence.

He never told me this but before he could propose to me, he was engaged. He pretended to say this jokingly but I could tell he meant it. The ride back home seemed longer than ever and we were quiet most of the time. Then as I left, I said the usual, 'it was nice meeting you again. Keep in touch.' He smiled and said, "Let's go to the seaface next time, like that day."

"Lift up your feet and put them on the ground
You used to walk upon (when you were young)".

Nice post Nova, loved it, especially the line you wrote...

melody becomes melancholic... lovely!
But then change is inevitable in life...
For good or for worse...

Nostalgia is like a dose of harmless happiness drug! As long as the high lasts, its really a happy moment, well, rather an ecstasic moment!! But you don't feel a low afterwards!

---------poignantly nostalgic; i can relate to every word here; yes, we don't realize, but the transformation happens; slowly but surely-------

--------enjoyed reading this; in fact i felt suspiciously close to tears when i read the final couplet---------
