 Dont value the valueless

A huge contributor to unhappiness is confusion about what is valuable. I feel that one reason people have a difficult time with life, as well as death, is that they have lost site of what is really valuable. I believe with all my heart that love is eternal, and is the source of all that has value. With love we have every reason to enjoy life and no reason to fear death.

It is important to step back periodically and ask yourself the question, "Where is it that my happiness really comes from?" This is important because where you think your happiness comes from will determine what you value and what you pursue. It is hard to get confused in your values when you are exposed to a fast and materialistic culture. We are all exposed to the same message from society each day: "Something outside of yourself will make you feel happier."

If you place value on something valueless, you will end up scared in some way. Why? This is because that which is valueless will not last forever....thus, you will fear its loss. What is valuable is eternal and there is no need to fear loss. Time can never diminish that which has true value. The gifts of love and compassion do not rust or fade. In fact, they grow the more they are shared and given.

Most material things can be vehicles of love and service or vehicles for greed, fear, and control. Material possessions are sometimes what we make of them. In Western culture, it is easy to believe that the more possessions you have, the happier we will be. In contrast, there are cultures which don't even have a word for ownership.

There are many people who have lost their homes, even their homeland, who have gone on to be truly happy and giving people. There are also those who never got over the loss and remain bitter. The difference is what is valued. If you always see love as the highest of values, you will always, maybe not right away, land on your feet with a smile on your face.

"Don't value the valueless."
