 The Zhai 3

Zakir scratched his chin.
‘So…do you believe in what Yuvi says?’ he asked.
‘I dunno’, Munna replied. ’I’m confused. But what he says does make sense.’

‘Tell me what happened’

‘Well’, said Munna. ‘Arjun met with an accident on the day you and Savitha left for Goa. Yuvi thinks it’s because of the curse while of course, J thinks otherwise. Yuvi had planned to talk to Diya on that day. But she had a row over the entire thing at the college with J….’

‘So is that it?’ Zakir asked. ‘Everything between Yuvi and Diya is over?’

‘I dunno’, Munna continued. ‘But I think Arya has a real problem. Archana is in Bangalore now.’

Z: ‘Why?’

M: ‘Well, Arjun says that she quarreled with Arya for the necklace he took home. She thinks that J forced us all to steal. She’s with her parents now and Arya says she’s gone to visit them.’

Z: ‘Has she decided to divorce him or what?’

M: ‘No, no, no. It’s not that serious as of yet. Well, actually, except Savitha, all the others are not happy that we went to Thiruvakkarai with J. especially, those jewels and gems scared them, I think.’

Z: ‘I don’t think Savitha liked it either. What did your ammi say about this?’

M: ‘It’s the same with her. She and my fiancée have joined hands now, to ‘correct’ me. They are so sure that I stole those things.’

Z: ‘Even my ammi thinks the same. She won’t listen when I say that we just took some of those things that belonged to nobody. But ammi and abba say that they are the government’s property. Abba in particular is really furious, coz this happened right after I told them that I’m dating a Hindu girl.’

M: ‘To be honest, even I’m not comfortable with what happened.’

Z: “so, what next?’

M: ‘We’re meeting at Barista this evening. J is so fed up that she says she’ll end everything today.’

Z: ‘Hope she doesn’t cause any more trouble.’

It was yet another boring hour. Shraddha ma’am was so engrossed in the subject that she didn’t notice the class sleeping.

J too was engrossed in her own thoughts. The sight of the palace and the box kept cropping up in her mind. She was watching the leaves of the jack fruit tree outside her classroom, swaying in rhythm with the gentle breeze. There had been lots of trees at the palace too. The Palace, where it all started. The ruined big building. The evidence, in fact, the only one, which stood for what happened so many years ago. The Palace…the root of their greed…the beginning of all their dreams…and nightmares…and troubles…..the palace….the palace…
