An Ounce of Virtue, A Pint of Sin!

An ounce of virtue, a pint of sin!

If you think education is expensive, try ignorance! One of my all time favourite quotes! Makes me wonder and ponder till my brain is over-wrought! And the mind, of its own accord thinks of another expression, ‘innocence’! Aren’t we often in a quandary about the clarity in the definition of these terms? Well-------what do the lexicons say?

Innocence: 1. The fact of not being guilty of a crime
2. Lack of knowledge or experience of the world, especially of evil or unpleasant things.

Ignorance: A lack of knowledge or information about something.

On the basis of these definitions, innocence doesn’t seem to be all that virtuous and ignorance doesn’t seem to be all that vicious! But then, there’s more to them than meets the eye!

Innocence brings to my mind visions of angels, fairies, fragrant woods, nymphs, petunias and daffodils, lovebirds, peacocks, crayon colours, blue sky, green sea, the waft of freshly baked bread--------------------------

Ignorance conjures up images of darkness, dense and dangerous forests, witches on brooms, (not the ones in the Harry Potter series; I luv them a lot, ha haaaaa), the sad smiley emoticon--------------------

Ignorance is bliss, did someone say? Now THAT in itself is ignorance! How can a sin be bliss? For ignorance IS a sin; call it the eighth deadly sin if you’d like to give it a place! Ignorance makes ignoramuses of us; and never would we like to be on that list!

We always pay for our ignorance; very heavily at that! Lack of information and knowledge, makes ignorance a social evil; a tough word; a tougher condition; Ignorance doesn’t constitute a wholesome life; doesn’t foster a holistic individual! It gives a false sense of security of being in a state of make-believe comfort and ease; while all the time, it draws us closer to the river of potential threats, lurking in the depths of unknown territories!

Ignorance is evil, cruel, sly and wily.
Innocence is pure, cherubic, bright and happy.
Ignorance is hard; innocence is fragile.

I read somewhere, ‘to the innocent, all is pure’! And so it is!

My ignorance makes me judgmental and skeptical; makes me fear the unknown; shatters my confidence in people; limits my scope of existence; angers me; loses my pep for survival; weakens me; transforms me into a poor excuse of a woman!

My innocence is synonymous with unquestioning trust; it believes; it’s non judgmental; it’s inspiring; it elevates me to higher planes of life, where I trust and I’m trusted; where I’m pure and perceive purity in others; where I see beauty in everything and everyone; where I perceive goodness and spread joy; where I seamlessly merge with the creator; where I connect to the cosmos!

I just need to strike a balance now; between these two conflicting dualities! I can’t be all innocent, for I’m an adult who needs to go through life; and I certainly can’t be ignorant to escape the woes of the world! Maybe I can draw upon my life experiences to give me the necessary wisdom to retain my childlike innocence without being vulnerable and to abhor ignorance though it’s a great temptation under stress; to exercise innocence and to exorcise ignorance! God help me!

cj,

one cant be all innocent and ignorant..balance between the two...big question.

i think innocence turns into ignorance with age and experience..for same lack of knowledge we say a child is innocent and a grown up ignorant..i precieve it this way..may be its wrong.

grown up innocent??? think!!!

Sazzy is right.Innocence is not a variety that can be cultivated.Either its there or its not.No wisdom gained thru expereince can help U to retain childlike innocence,.its an absolute trait,it doesnt exist in parts, its either zero or Hundred percent.
A nice post CJ.

Ignorance is Bliss!!! Being in the continous state of ignorance is dangerous....Ignorance borne out of innocence is divine.....Yet being an Ignoramus is old fashioned...
The confusion goes on.......Let's be innocently
ignorant....Coz half a knowledge is dangerous indeed!!!
