 MAA TUJHE SALAAM

              MY    MOTHER

Mothers are made of truly tough stuff .   And a mother who is the wife of a freedom fighter ? Wife of a man who always had the country and its  freedom  above anything else , even his family took a backseat !  But the family had to survive , had to flourish , had to be given all the attention and care ! She had to be a mother and a father too !

What stuff is required to make such a mother ? What courage , determination , singlemindedness ,devotion , dedication ,discipline and self respect  have to go into the making of such a mother ?

My mother did  have  that stuff !

She  knew  that  the survival of  her family  solely depended  upon her !  She  knew  that if  her  husband  is  married  to the ideals  of  the  Mahatma  , she  had  to divorce  the  luxuries  and  pleasures  of  a wife  and  had  to  own  the  responsibilities  and  sacrifices  of a mother at  a  very  tender age  of  sixteen !!

She  made   men  out  of  her  three  sons  and   responsible  women out of  her  two  daughters !

Not  very  literate  , but  very  knowledgable and aware !  Studied   till class  seventh  that   too  after  her  marriage  , when   my  father   was  imprisoned  during  the   1942  non-cooperation  movement  . She   realised    how  much  support  my  father  needed   from  her  , to carry  out   his   aims   and  goals   to  free   our  country  and  tread  the  path  and  ideals   of  Mahatma  Gandhi  !  She  never   questioned   him  even  once   and     took upon  herself  the  task  of  looking after   the  family  !

After    independence    my father  was  entrusted    with  the  job  of   spreading    education   among   the    tribals    of   Chotanagpur    , now  Jharkhand . Did  she  lag  behind  ? No  , she  followed   him  to  the    remotest     areas   , where   even  birds  were     afraid  to  fly over  ! She  could  have   stayed  back   , but   then  a  wife  of  a  freedom  fighter !   could  she  afford  to  do  that ??

Till    very  recently  ,  never  allowed   anyone   of  her   three  daughter-in-laws  to  venture  into  or  to  enter    her   queendom  that  was  her   kitchen  ! She  might   not  have  provided   them  (DILs)   with    the  material   comforts   and  luxuries   , but   surely   provided  them with  the  freedom   , highly    unheard  of  in those  days   and   even  now  !  My  eldest    bhabhi  , pursued    her   higher  education   only  after   her  marriage , worked   as  a  teacher    and  retired   as  a  Principal  of  that school recently. She  had    the  full    support   of her  MIL  , morally  , physically  , mentally  !!  All  of  her   three   DILs   say  even  now   , that   the  kind  of  freedom  and    respect    they    enjoyed   at   their  in-law's  place   ,   was  not  available  to  them    even  in  their  own  mothers'  house  !  The  greatest    compliment  my  mother   could  get  !

When  my  father  died   , she  never    shed   a  drop  of  tear  , though    she  was   wailing   and   weeping  and  mourning  from  inside   !  Never   believed   in  the  external   show  of  emotions  !  Still  wears    the  normal  everyday    sarees   and   not   the  white  ones   !   May    be  she thinks   her  husband   is  not  with  her  bodily  , but  she  is  still   married  to  his    ideals  , thoughts  and  memories  !

She  has    one  room    exclusively  for  herself   in  the  house  my  father  built . This   is  the whole  world  for  her  Does  her   own    chores  even  now   at  the  age    of  93  .  Never    likes    to  leave   the  place  .  Doesnt  speak  much  , her    wrinkled  face    and    caressing  eyes    speak  volumes  about  her  !

Maa  , I  love  you  , respect  you  , worship  you , adore  you  , always   want  to  be  YOU and  YOU  !!!!
