 If I Were You---------!

In response to Fropper's Woman's Day Contest! The Woman I'd Love to be Born As!

 If I Were You----!

Oxymoron, thy name is woman! Tough but tender, strict but kind, down-to-earth but dreamy, practical but wistful, grown-up but kid, steely but soft, skeptical but trusting, desperate but delighted, silly but scintillating, naïve but suave, hesitant but confident, strong but vulnerable, difficult but tolerant, hard-to-please but easily won over, simple, yet complicated! All these and more make the ‘wonder’ that’s a woman! And the world would have been a lackluster globe without them!

And the earth has indeed turned out some exotic and unique characters; those who have made womanhood proud; those who have risen above the mundane and won over adversity! To want to be ONE of them? Oh, what an impossible task that would be! More difficult than it ever has been for a woman trying to shop the best outfit or jewellery!

To begin at the very beginning, I have my homegrown role models! My mom, the epitome of femininity, the best under the sun! I would trade my little finger to be able to be as creative as she is; to be able to mesmerize a crowd as she does by her musical voice! My aunt – she’s a natural at winning hearts! My sister – the brains of the family!

Moving out a bit, I have those delightful friends; one who excels in music; one in art; one in her profession; and one, in sheer gracefulness, a coveted, but never attained quality for a tom-boy like moi!

And then we have those who made the headlines; the National heroes; the stars in the Indian Galaxy! Proven woman power in various fields, like literature, art, science, sports and the silver screen – Indira Gandhi, Sarojini Naidu, Shakuntal Devi, Kalpana Chawla, Arundati Roy, Smita Patil, Shabana Asmi--------these are but a few sprinklings of an entire gamut!

Across the boundaries and beyond the blues, we have Queen Elizabeth, Princess Diana, Benazir Bhuto, Enid Blyton, J K Rowling, Julia Roberts, The Williams Sisters -------------- to name a few of the most spoken of!

And right under our noses, we have the superwomen of fropperland! Wouldn’t I love to be as peppy and warm as my sistah saz? Or as much a force to reckon with as my sistah Dags? And we have the Rias, Renus and an assortment of others to emulate and look up to!

I love these girls/ladies for what they are; I admire them for their special traits; I’d follow them to the end of the world for their kindness, courage and gumption! But do I wish to be like one of them? And given a chance, to be born as one of them?

What happens to me then? The ‘me’ that was born and lovingly brought up by the most wonderful parents on the earth; the ‘me’ that has grown up to an individual in her own rights; the ‘me’ that has journeyed life these forty plus years, through ups and downs, pleasure and pain, ecstasy and depression; the ‘me’ that has been a daughter, sister, mother, friend and trainer? The moment I say ‘I wish to be born as an Indira Gandhi, or a Mother Teresa’, I inadvertently say that I’d rather be someone else than be myself or that I don’t like being who I am!

I’m not making an arrogant statement here; nor am I a ‘perfect role-model’; I’m aware of my short comings and limitations; but while I say all that, I’d like to say in the same breath, that, I’m proud of who and what I’m today. I may not have made it to the paparazzi, but as people have touched my life, I’ve touched people’s lives. I’ve got an identity. Everyone is worth the world; everyone has something unique in them.

So, while I’d love to take a leaf out of the books of all those who made those success or glamour stories, I’d like to retain myself; my identity; my individuality. I’m honoured to have been born a woman and I’m grateful to the Almighty for having made me the way I'm! Give me not once chance, but ten to be born again; I’d still like to be ‘me’!

 yours truly

 CJ

however, only one question- the word oxymoron does it suit the context of the sentence you started with in the beginning?
