Big beast of the BEST class

On my way to work, every morning, I take the Worli sea face because the alternate route (below the new Worli fly-over) is quite crowded. The road along the sea has little traffic and one can drive fast, test cars & burn some rubber especially when the khakhis aren’t around with their newly acquired sophisticated radar guns. Why do they have radar guns on a scantly populated stretch of road? I am sure we all know the reason – someone could potentially kill a potential passerby.

On one such morning, after crossing the sea face, when I reached the signal I usually take a right turn on, I noticed that a big beast of the BEST class was besides my car. The signal was red and we were all (including the big beast) waiting patiently for it to change. The big beast wanted to go straight and I wanted to go right. So, for all practical purposes, we wouldn’t be in either ones’ path. Suddenly, the big beast started revving his engine and tooting his horn. I thought the signal had turned green because that was the only logical explanation for his restlessness. But that wasn’t true. The signal was still red. He kept revving his engine, turned towards the left & started honking. Sensing the pressure, the cars besides the big beast and in front started inching forward and in the next moment, they all (about 10 cars) had jumped the signal.

If a regular citizen had jumped a signal, it would not be so grave because perhaps he/she was facing some kind of emergency and/or was just not in a mood to hang around at the signal. What I don’t understand is why a big beast driver needs to drive rashly, cause stress amongst other commuters & endanger lives. Does he get paid to do a fixed number of round trips? Does he get thanked by people for such behavior? Who’s to blame for this? The BEST stable from which the big beast comes OR the radar-happy-slightly-hungry khakhis OR our Government OR is it just us Indians!

BEST drivers are a nuisance most times.
I can understand their plight, but being rash in totally unwarranted.

Navin,
I thought BEST drivers were really some of the best in the country, when I compare the traffic in those days's Bombay with other metros and cities and what those drivers have to face to swim through anything and everything on the earth in front of them. I have been to most of Indian Cities and haven't seen such skilled drivers as those in BEST. May that was a decade ago.. in late 90's. Don't know much about present conditions.
But then, this could be an One-Off stray incident.
Anyways, Mumbaikars could explain it bette.
But, I think all other metros come ony next to BEST drivers..

The buses in Delhi are private. Hence the motive to make many trips and earn as much money as possible. However, here, the BEST is a state undertaking. It is important to make money but on public utilities, there has to be a balance. Even in Delhi, the government should have basic norms that prevent misuse and abuse in the interest of money.

I dun know much bout how BEST pays their drivers but here in Delhi the private bus operators push their drivers to make the maximum trips which results in accidents and the DTC bus drivers are on a payroll.
As i had mentioned in one of my posts, all the DTC (same as BEST) drivers have immunity from law, till date i haven't seen any DTC bus driver getting a speeding ticket here in Delhi.

As for us, one can install a speed gun detector and zip around the city at high speeds widout of course putting his n others life at risk!!!
These gadgets, usually chinese n korean made can be obtained from any car accessory outlet. Delhites shud try karol bagh and Mumbaikars shud try opera house market ;)
They warn bout the presence of a speed radar / gun 100-250mtrs ahead of their position.

As for us indians, we'll always be pushy and restless no matter wat the Govt or the traffic cops do. We r born wid d instinct to break laws !!!
