Suicide Prevention and an Individual's Role

Suicide Prevention and an Individual's Role

When I read about suicide on one of the ezblogs, I felt I should do a post on this topic.  These days we see a spurt of suicides in Farmers, Army jawans, IT  community etc. in our country- India.  We've come to accept the news of suicide reports in media as mere statistics.  But even an individual can play a role in preventing suicide.  Yes as an individual, you or for that matter I can make difference in someone's life (who's nearer/dearer to us) at that point of time when a -few moments spared- can make all the difference between Life and Death.  From my personal experience I can say that my timely comforting helped in saving two of my friends' life though I won't claim credit for that and I will express my gratitude to the "Creator" who happened to have made that happen.

Suicide is considered as a cry for help and people who are feeling suicidal are always caught in a conflict between the wish to live and the urge to die. People who commit suicide take this extreme step only because they are confused and not able to take any other decision and they are forced to take this decision.  According to Medical Science: “When a person is depressed, the level of serotonin, a chemical messenger that transmits signals between nerve cells becomes low in the part of the brain that controls the mood. When the depression is severe, it might lead a person to suicide...” .  Protective/Preventive factors include high self-esteem and social network, especially with family and friends, having social support, being in a stable relationship, and religious or spiritual commitment.

September 10th is World SUICIDE Prevention Day (Designated by WHO & UN).

This year(2007) the theme of World Suicide Prevention Day is "Suicide across the Life Span." This theme has been adopted to emphasize the fact that suicide occurs in all ages and suicide prevention and intervention strategies may be adapted to meet the needs of different age groups. The fact that children as young as five can feel suicidal because of neglect should be a worrying factor.  There are many voluntary organisations working in the field of suicide prevention.  People who are in distress or people who want to help others in distress but don't have the resources to help can always contact these organisations.

Hi sangeet9633

Its nice to have you on board. Yep, as you said many websites that tutor to end-one's-life have popped up. As usual it's left to one's discretion.... making a right choice between right and wrong.

I came across a totally shocking article a little while ago about how certain websites were encouraging people to commit suicide. Not only that, they were also dishing out ridiculous advice as to how to choose the most convenient method for ending one's life. What's really sad about such inhumane enterprises is that people actually listen to them and think that they UNDERSTAND.We need to nip this evil in the bud,the post is a step in that direction.Good write up!

Good post there coolfriend21!

Sometimes there are no forewarnings though and ending ones life just seems like the best thing to do. A person need not be mentally imbalanced to be suicidal. There are no hard and fast reasons as to why people make certain choices.

Hi jdoc

Yeah you have a point there when you talk about people with pshychiatric problems. This problem will require constant medical attention, pshychiatric help which will be a bit more than one can chew if an individual wants to help them . Of course voluntary organisations come into picture for these people. But I feel as an individual we can make the utmost difference in life of someone who's very normal till that point of time when he/she is on the verge to commit suicide.

first the society look into angle of psychiatric help to these people with depression and suicidal tendencies. generally a failed attept precceds sicide. a person with with suicidal traits are so unwell they are mostly not in condition to seek medical help themselves they have to be proactively sought and helped. friends relatives and collegues ignore them as aloof mad person, instead of helping them.
