A letter to my son

Background My only son informed me that he is in love and wants to marry a girl. He also did not provide the details except that the girl is from a community generally unacceptable to my family and is from a distant part of the country – we know very little of. I share with you all, the mail I sent him. Dear son, Blessings. Your phone call and the mail has perturbed me and your mum. We do not know how to react. This is sudden and very disturbing. The present culture of the society……… tells us not to be hasty in taking decision. Convincing your Dada and Daadi is also no easy task. So what do I do ……………the old cliche ‘ you are an adult take your decisions and bear the consequences.’ I am unable to stop myself from giving some unasked advice (I am sure it is superfluous). These few verses ………… Yeh jo ishq hai mere laal Yeh fareb hai jaal hai Lailaa majnoo se puchcho Fitnaa aur bawaal hai Is pachde me na pado Is me nahin dil ka karaar hai Kaamyaabi kataee mumkin nahin Jo kamyaab hai laachaar hai Maza chala jaata hai jawaani ka Ragadte rahiye chiraag jo bin jinnat hai Chalo chodo yeh kissaa lago dhandhe se Aakhir pet ka bhi to sawaal hai Abhi to chand ghanto ki mashakkat hai Apnee zid pe rahoge to roz ka malaal hai Aur dil ki baat ek behtar shayar ki zabaani Likh jo diyen hain Chand Alfaaz yahan, Fakat Kaghaz pe kuch andaaz hain, Bohot chhota hai inka kadd, Aur naa inpe hume utna naaz hai… !! a very confused father

Warfare is Good

All religions are full of tales about battles and wars. The Hindu mythology is also repleat with wars between Gods and demons. However, inspite of two world wars, this planet has never been free of it. Wars fascinate but most of us would prefer PEACE. I share with you different perspective of war here. These ideas were mooted during a conference on the Evolutionary Origins of War and anthropologists, archaeologists, primatologists, psychologists and political scientists were in consensus on this emerging theory. Details are available at….. (http://www.newscientist.com/article/mg20026823.800-how-warfare-shaped-human-evolution.html?full=true) The new theory moots…………. We are focused on the harm wars do and forget that it requires a very high level of cooperation. This is a heritage worth hanging on to. Warfare is not a product of human culture and is as ancient as mankind and has played an integral role in our evolution. The cooperative skills essential for being effective warriors have been converted in to the modern ability to work towards a common goal. Warfare was responsible for evolution of social behaviour and the real driver was an interplay between alternative benefits of peace and warfare. Cultures where diseases and parasites are common prefer to drive away strangers who may carry new diseases and consequently become more insular and xenophobic. In contrast, cultures with a low risk of disease are more open to outsiders. These attitudes to outsiders are responsible for a culture's attitude to war. Modern warfare with its complex strategies, and advanced, long-distance weapons bears little resemblance to the hand-to-hand skirmishes of our ancestors. This may mean we're left with battle instincts unsuited to our time. I personally believe that this is an attempt to give a positive connotation to warfare by western intellectuals. The need for this has arisen because.... a)War is big business and a global war is bigger business b)The current financial meltdown requires drastic measures and a global war is a easy political solution. c) A war will distract the common people from real issues and will help perpetuate current economical big wigs. More coloured pics relating to I-World War are posted in my zone.

Kuchch namkeen

Diwaali is over and done with but I failed to offer any sweets. Here is kuchch namkeen for belated Diwaali celebrations. Salt is the only rock directly consumed by man. It corrodes but preserves, desiccates but is wrested from the water. It has fascinated man for thousands of years not only as a prized substance, but also as a generator of poetic and of mythic meaning. The contradiction it embodies intensifies its power and its links with experience of the sacred. All 5.9 billion inhabitants of earth use salt everyday. Salt is essential for survival. The pre-historic man obtained salt from the meat of hunted animals. Salt was added to supplement the vegetable and cereal diet after development of agriculture. Over the past century the annual production of salt world-wide has increased from 10 million tonnes to over 200 million tonnes today. In Biblical times, salt was used to seal an agreement or contract. Men wore a pouch of salt tied to their belt and when they made a promise to someone, each put a pinch of salt into the other’s pouch. If a man wanted to break his covenant for reasons that did not seem fair, the other could respond by telling him "Yes, if you can retrieve your grains and yours only from my pouch of salt". Salt was similarly used to seal a deal in Arabic countries, where it also signified safety and friendship. If you were offered and ate salt in someone's home it meant they would never harm you in any way and vice versa. The Bible refers to the covenant of salt by which God gave the rule over Israel forever to David and his sons. The Law of Moses required that all cereal offerings contain salt. Salts value lay in its power to preserve foods. The term "salt of the earth" meant that you were a valuable person. It was also used as currency in form of packets. Participants at medieval feasts were seated in order of importance based on the location of the salt dishes. Distinguished guests dined at an elegant elevated banquet table "above the salt." Lesser lights sat "below" in progressively lower order. An old Latin proverb stated "There is nothing more useful than the sun and salt" (Nil sole et sale utilius). Since it was essential for preserving food, spilling salt was a terrible waste that would surely bring bad luck. In "The Last Supper", Leonardo da Vinci placed an overturned dish of salt in front of the scowling Judas Iscariot. Some believe that the superstition may have started with this painting. The Roman empire built a road for transport of salt called the Via salaria. It exists to date. The Druids used salt in their Stonehenge rituals because it was believed to represent a symbol of the life-giving fruits of the earth. In old Japanese theatres, salt was sprinkled on the stage before each performance to prevent evil spirits from casting a spell on the actors and ruining the play. Salt was also thought to provide sanctification. One of the four principal tenets of the Shinto religion was the guarantee of physical cleanliness before praying or approaching a shrine, which required lots of sprinkling with salt and then washing. The clay of the Dohyo or sumo ring is considered a sacred spot and must be purified the day before each tournament by the head referee and a Shinto priest, who pour sake and salt in its center. It is still practiced in Sumo wrestling. In some countries, it is customary to greet newlyweds with gifts of salt and bread to bring good luck instead of throwing confetti or rice. Roman mothers rubbed salt on the lips of infants to protect them from illness and danger. Though no longer common, for hundreds of years Roman Catholic priests would place a pinch of salt on a baby's tongue during baptism and say, "Receive the salt of wisdom." Salt was so valuable that caravans carried it across the Sahara to Eastern trading centers to exchange for gold, ivory, slaves and skins. Salt bars were the coin of the realm in Ethiopia for over a thousand years and cakes of salt stamped to show their value were also used as currency in countries from Borneo to Tibet. Salt Totkaas * Tossing a pinch of spilt salt is the antidode for ill luck by spilling salt. * If you have a curse or hex on you by a gypsy then once they leave your home throw a pinch of salt in their direction to nullify the curse * If you have a frequent unwanted visitor then simply throw a pinch of salt at them when they are in your house. They will not return. * Fishermen never use the word as it is taboo while at sea however they sprinkle fishingnets with salt to ensure safe return * If you want a lover to return then burn salt on seven consecutive mornings * If you are a bride then sprinkle a pinch of salt onto your dress for a happy marriage. * Never lend salt if you are outside the house, at a picnic etc., this will bring you bad luck * Bathe newborn babies in salt and water to ward off witchcraft * Dairymaids sprinkled a pinch of salt in their pails to stop any witch from curdling the milk * Never offer another diner a salt celler that is open. It brings saorrow. Indian context Ayurveda maintains that consumption of salt aggravates the element of fire in one’s constitution. In some people, it can induce the attitudes of rigidity in outlook while in some others it can induce immediate need for sensual gratification, something we could understand as addiction. That’s the secret behind the popular "No one can eat just one" ditty….and explains the urge to continually dip into the bag for more salted peanuts or wafers. The concept of “namak haraam” and “namak halaal” (both highly acclaimed movies) is well ensconced in our culture. Salt has remained tax free from the time of the interim government headed by Jawaharlal Nehru. Mahatma Gandhi's march to Dandi and the symbolic protest against the tax on salt was an important step in the Indian freedom struggle. No government in independent India taxed this commodity. Salt taxes Salt was taxed by governments from the ancient Chinese and Romans to late medieval Burgundy, where salt was taxed at more than 100% as it came from the salt-works. The repeal of the salt tax was a major goal of the revolutionaries of 1789, but Napoléon restored it as soon as he became Emperor, to pay for his foreign wars: and it continued until 1945. It is said that income from a salt pan in southern Spain largely financed Columbus' voyages. In the United States, the State of New York financed the Erie Canal with its salt tax! Salt quotes (my selection) “Salt is born of the purest of parents: the sun and the sea.” Pythagoras (580 BC - 500 BC) “It takes four men to dress a salad: a wise man for the salt, a madman for the pepper, a miser for the vinegar, and a spendthrift for the oil.” (Unknown) "Wit is the salt of conversation, not the food." William Hazlitt (1778-1830) Ham: 40 days in salt, 40 days hanging, in 40 days eaten." Joseph Delteil, French writer (1894-1978). “Trust no one unless you have eaten much salt with him.” Cicero (106-43 BC) Salt tips *If an egg breaks on the kitchen floor, sprinkle salt on the mess and leave it there for 20 minutes. You'll be able to wipe it off cleanly. *Soothe a bee sting. Wet the sting right away, then cover it with salt. *Eliminate a grease fire. Pour salt on top to smother it. (Never use water on a grease fire.) *Clean up oven spills. If food boils over onto the oven floor, sprinkle salt on top to stop smoke and odor from forming. When the oven is cool, it'll be easy to brush away the spot. *Kill poison ivy. Add three pounds of salt to a gallon of soapy water. Spray it onto leaves and stems. *Test for rotten eggs. Put an egg in a cup of water to which you've added two teaspoons of salt. A fresh egg will sink, but one that's iffy will float. *Repel fleas. Wash the doghouse with it. *For cleaning a glass pot, fill it with a quarter-cup of table salt and a dozen ice cubes. Swish the mixture around, let it sit for half an hour, fill it with cold water and rinse. *Stop suds from an overflowing washing machine. Sprinkle salt on the top. *Clean artificial flowers. Put them in a bag of salt and shake the bag. Take a look at the color of the salt and you'll see what you've accomplished. *Clean coffee and tea stains from china cups. Rub them with salt. *Keep potatoes and apples from turning brown once they're sliced. Put them in salted cold water. More information is available at http://www.saltinstitute.org. In conclusion we have all types of tastes and flavours in this virtual world…..but who are the ones we could call the salt of this site. Let us find it out ………….name 3 – 5 members who you consider to be the "Salt" in froppers pot pourri, so we that we all can honour and appreciate their special gifts.

Indian History Rewritten

While surfing I came across this masterpiece ‘Indian History : Supposedly written by a schoolboy with all original spellings’. Excerpts from the original are shared here and the full version can be viewed at http://www.imserba.com/forum/showthread.php?t=85179 There have been posts deriding the misuse/ abuse of English language. My friends with finer sensibilities to the language and finicky for historical details are warned to read it at their own risk and no responsibility of any untoward event w.r.t your existing knowledge, sense of history, language, etc lies with the person posting it. In case you are fmiliar with the original piece, I apologise and regret wasting your time. Excerpts The original inhabitants of ancient India were called Adidases, who lived in two cities called Hariappa and Mujhe-na-Daro. These cities had the best drain system in the world and so there was no brain drain from them. A myth is a female moth. A collection of myths is called mythology, which means stories with female caricatures. In olden times there were two big families in India. One was called the Pandava and the other was called the Karova. They fought amongst themselves in a battle called Mahabharat, after which India came to be known as Mera Bharat Mahan. In midevil times India was ruled by the Slave Dienasty. Then came the Tughlaqs who shifted their capital from Delhi because of its pollution. They were followed by the Mowglis. The greatest Mowgli was Akbar because he extinguished himself on the battlefield of Panipat which is in Hurryana. But his son Jehangir was peace loving; he married one Hindu wife and kept 300 porcupines. Shahajahan who had 14 sons. Family planning had not been invented at that time. He also built the Taj Mahal hotel for his wife who now sleeps there. Orangezip came to Bombay to fight Shivaji. However, after that they changed its name to Mumbai because Shivaji’s sena did not like it. After the Mowglis came Vasco the Gama. He was an exploder who was circumcising India with a 100 foot clipper. Then came the British. They brought with them many inventions such as cricket, tramtarts and steamed railways. They were followed by the French who brought in French fries, pizzazz and laundry. But Robert Clive drove them out when he deafened Duplex who was out membered since the British had the queen on their side. The British overruled India for a long period. They were great expotents and impotents. They started expoting salt from India and impoting cloth. This was not liked by Mahatma Gandhi who wanted to produce his own salt. This was called the Swedish moment. During this moment, many people burnt their lion cloths in the street and refused to wear anything else. The British became very angry at this and stopped the production of Indian testiles. In 1920, Mahatma Gandhi was married to one wife. Soon after he became the father of the nation. In 1942 he started the Quiet India moment, so named because the British were quietly lootoing our country. India became free and its people became freely loving. This increased our population. Our constipation is the best in the world because it says that no man can be hanged twice for the same crime. It also says you cannot be put in prison if you have not paid your taxis. Another important thing about our constipation is that it can be changed. This is not possible with the British constipation because it is not written on paper. Scams are all over India. One of these was in Bihar where holy cows were not given anything to eat by their elected leader. The other scam was in Bofor which is a small town in Switzerland. In this, a lot of Indian money was given to buy a gun which can shoot a coot. Presently India has a coalishun government made up of many parties, left, right and centre. It has started to library the economy India is also trying to become an Asian tiger because its own tigers are being poached. Another important event this year was the Shark meeting at Malas Dive. At this place, shark leaders agreed to share their poverty, pollution and population I sincerely hope you that you are in a fit condition to move on to other places on this site.

Dream Themes

thaa khwaab mein khyaal ko tujhse muamlaa jab aankh khul gayee na ziyan thaa na suud thaa (gaalib) --------------------------------------- Within the dreams, we were exchanging thoughts When the eyes opened, there was neither gain nor loss Dreams have only one owner at a time. That's why dreamers are lonely. Everyone dreams (some of us often forget them) and it has been suggested that most of our dreams have similar themes. Interpretation of dreams generally interest all of us. Often these interpretations are outright bizarre but some times these are pretty logical. I have compiled some of the common themes and their interpretations (the more rational ones). 1 Falling or Sinking The dreamer usually sees him self falling through the air and is frightened. Occasionally it may be sinking in water and in danger of drowning. A person having this dream is feeling insecure or lacking in support in their life. The dream often occurs when one is overwhelmed in life and feels like giving up. 2 Nudity The dreamer sees him self in a state of undress, partial undress, or inappropriate dress. Occasionally the dreamer witnesses another person who is naked while he is clothed. The dream is often accompanied by feelings of embarrassment and shame. A person having this dream is feeling exposed, awkward, or vulnerable, or is afraid of having revealed too much of self in a real life situation. This type of dream occurs much more frequently in people who are involved in a wedding ceremony in their real life. 3 Car Troubles The dreamer sees himself near a car or some other type of vehicle which is out of control or has other problems that seem insurmountable. For example, the brakes may have failed, the steering is out of control, or car heading for a cliff / crash. This is a common type of nightmare and it occurs in all people - not just those who can drive. This dream usually means that one is feeling powerless over something in his real life - or feels that he is heading for a metaphorical crash. 4 Being Chased Dreaming of being chased can be a truly horrifying experience. Most often the chaser is a monster or some person that is frightening, and occasionally it may be an animal. This is a commonly experienced nightmare theme. Sometimes this dream is a replay of an actual event in ones life. It means that someone / something is making the dreamer feel threatened. 5 Ill or Dying The dreamer sees himself (or a loved one) ill, injured, or dying. It is not a a uncommon dream and often occurs at the onset of an illness. Aside from becoming ill, this dream can mean that deamer is emotionally hurt or is afraid of becoming hurt. The dream could be a warning of an upcoming physical risk to dreamer or a loved one. When it is someone else in the dream that dies, it may mean that dreamer fears losing them. 6 Failing a Test This dream usually manifests itself in people who have been out of school for a long time. The dreamer fails to pass a test in a variety of different possible scenarios. Either the dreamer is unable to make it to the test on time / unable to find the test room / is unprepared through lack of study or is missing essential equipment like pen etc. It usually means that the dreamer is feeling tested in some way in real life. The dreamer may perceive himself to be unprepared for something in his real life. 7 Missed a Train/Boat/Plane The dreamer sees himself rushing to catch a bus, train, plane, or other type of public transport - but misses it – often by a fraction of a second. It is usually accompanied with a feeling of frustration. It denotes that the dreamer has a feeling that he has missed out on an important opportunity in real life. It will often occur when on is struggling over an important decision. 8 Lost or Trapped The dream comprises of an effort to find ones way out of an area - such as a forest, city streets, a large building, or other maze-like structure. It often involves a theme of being trapped, buried alive, caught in a web, or unable to move for one or other reason. This is often accompanied by a feeling of terror. This dream usually means that the person is trapped in real life and is unable to make the right choice. It occurs during times of conflict in real life. 9 Faulty Machinery The theme here is …….trying to operate mechanical equipment which either fails to work, or fails to work in the expected way. A large majority of these dreams involve a telephone, Internet connection, or something manual like a jammed or broken machine. This dream often means that one is losing touch with reality, or that a part of body or mind is not functioning as it should. It may occur when one is feeling anxious about making a connection with another person in real life. 10 Bad or Missing Teeth Teeth dreams are generally involve the discovery of decayed or missing teeth in his mouth by the dreamer, or teeth beginning to fall out on opening of mouth. At the most basic level it means that we are afraid of being found unattractive. At a deeper level, it can signify a fear of embarrassment or a loss of power in real life. Before concluding I share with you here some dreams mentioned in the Bible. • Jacob dreams of a ladder to heaven (Genesis 28); • his son Joseph dreamed of his future success (Genesis 37) and interpreted the dreams of the Pharaoh of Egypt (Genesis 41); • Solomon conversed with God in his dreams; • Daniel interpreted dreams (in the Book of Daniel); • the Magi are told in a dream to avoid Herod on their journey home (Matthew 2). • Joseph, husband of Mary, was directed to flee to Egypt (Matthew 2); • Paul was told to go to Macedonia (Acts 16). Finally you may agree or not but please share your dreams (own experiences).

Khali dibba khali botal

Khali dibba khali botal lele mere yaar Khali se mat nafrat kar khali yeh sansaar. I was reminded of this song from the old movie NeelKamal after receiving a profound .pps presentation in mail. (Why can’t we upload and share .pps files on Froppers ?). The .pps mail in brief. Hoarding useless objects, thinking that one day you may need them. Accumulating money , and not spending it because you think that in the future you may want for it. Storing clothes, shoes, furniture, utensils and other items. These clutter up your living space. When we store for future, we give in to the possibility of wanting, of penury and that tomorrow may not be as good as today. Two messages are thus sent to the brain tomorrow is uncertain and the new and the better is unachievable. Keeping reproaches, resentment, sadness, fears inside yourself clutters up your mind. The attitude of keeping a heap of useless stuff / feelings ties your life down. It’s not the objects/ideas you keep that stagnate your life.....but rather the attitude of keeping... The force of this emptiness is one that will absorb and attract all that you wish. Make space. Respect emptiness. The idea appealed to me and is basically sound. I share with you here a trivia on emptiness from quantum physics: There is so much empty space (emptiness) inside matter (atoms, molecules) that the entire human race could be squeezed into the volume of a sugar cube. It is unbelievable, but true! Source: The Quantum Zoo: A Tourist's Guide to the Neverending Universe by Marcus Chown One of the towering achievement of modern physics is quantum theory which has enabled us to understand the physical reality in a remarkable and unprecedented manner. "If the empty space in atoms were removed, the entire human race would fit in the volume of a sugar cube" - this humorously presented fact points to the overwhelmingly integrated emptiness in our physical world from scientific point of view. Emptiness embedded in this creation is something about which ancient mystics and sages talked about hundreds and thousands of years earlier in the language of metaphysics. Buddha discoursed about Emptiness of Reality (empty of inherent existence). It has become one of the central doctrine of Buddhism. Off course the mystics, sages and Buddha - all were addressing the emptiness of not only matter, but beyond as well. Give it a thought and share your views. My Comment.Sep 30, 2008 Thanks every body for putting in your opinion or visiting and giving it a read. I will add just one more thougt provoking one liner........koshika brahmandam, brahmanda koshikam, to this pot pourri of science, common sense, myth and philosophy. More of this some other time..........let the Big Bang bring out some concrete results.

The Origin and Structure of Universe

This is the biggest mystery of all times. Scientists and their jargon is often too technical to comprehend for most of us. I tried to make some sense and what little I could glean is presented here.

Scientific view point

The Big Bang Theory(BBT) and its related Inflation Universe Theories (IUTs) are today's dominant scientific conjectures. According to these interrelated notions, the universe was created between 13 and 20 billion years ago from the random, cosmic explosion (or expansion) of a subatomic ball that hurled space, time, matter and energy in all directions. Everything - the whole universe -- came from an initial speck of infinite density (also known as a "singularity"). This speck (existing outside of space and time) appeared from no where, for no reason, only to explode (start expanding) all of a sudden. Over a period of approximately 10 billion years, this newly created space, time, matter and energy evolved into remarkably-designed and fully-functional stars, galaxies and planets, including our earth. (http://www.allaboutthejourney.org/origin-of-the-universe.htm)

Cosmologists envision two possible fates for the Universe: The Big Freeze or the Big Crunch.

The scientific thesis is riddled with a number of still unexplained issues that include boundaries of space, time and matter. This made me look at the different myths about the beginning of this world. I share with you here the Pauranic myth relating to our earth and universe.

Hindu Myth
Vishnu is the Lord of creation, preservation and destruction. Before creation there was no day, night, no land or sky. Only Brahm (eternal truth) was everywhere.

Lord Vishnu first created the waters. Then he sowed the seeds of Brahmanda (universe) in the waters. From these seed there developed a Golden Egg which began to float on the waters. From the egg Lord Brahma created himself. Since he created himself (svayam sambhuta), Brahma is also known as Svayambhu.

Having created himself, Brahma stayed inside the egg for an entire year. And at the end of the year, he split the egg into two. One part of the egg formed the heavens, the other the earth. And in between the two parts of the egg, Brahma created the sky.

Brahma next established the earth on the waters and made the ten directions. He created time, lightning, thunder, clouds, rainbows, words and anger. To ensure that yajnas could be performed, texts of the Rig Veda, the Yajur Veda and the Sama Veda emerged from his body.

From the powers of his mind, Brahma created seven sons (manas putras). Their names were Marichi, Atri, Angira, Pulastya, Pulaha Kratu and Vashishtha for populating the world but this effort failed (details some other time).

Prithu was the first king crowned by Brahma. From Prithu the earth came to be known as Prithivi.
(Source: BrahmVaivarta Purana)

The earth (Prithivi or Bhuloka) extends upto those hieghts of the sky that can be lit up by the rays of the sun and the moon. The expanse from there to the solar circle is known as Bhuvarloka and holy sages live there. Above the solar circle is the lunar circle and beyond it, in succession, come the regions of Mercury (Budha), Venus (Shukra), Mars (Mangala), Jupiter (Brihaspati), Saturn (Shani), the Great Bear constellation (Saptarshi) and the Pole Star (Dhruva). The region from the solar circle to Dhruvaloka is known as heaven (Svargloka or svarga). Beyond Dhruvaloka is Maharloka and further away are Janaloka, Tapaloka and Satyaloka.
At the end of a kalpa, all the three lokas (regions) of Bhuloka, Bhuvarloka and Svargloka are destroyed. But the four lokas of Maharloka, Janaloka, Tapaloka and Satyaloka are not destroyed.

The earth is divided into seven regions (dvipas). Their names are Jambudvipa, Plakshadvipa, Shalmaladvipa, Kushadvipa, Krounchadvipa, Shakadvipa and Pushkaradvipa. These regions are surrounded by seven oceans and their names are Lavana, Ikshu, Sura, Sarpi, Dadhi, Dugdha and Jala.

Jambudvipa is in the center of earth and right in the middle of Jambudvipa is Mount Sumeru. To the south of Sumeru are the mountains Himavana, Hemakuta and Nishadha and to the north of Sumeru are the mountains Nila, Shveta and Shringi. Jambudvipa itself is divided into several regions (varshas). For example, Sumeru is in the middle of Ilavritavarsha. Braratavarsha is to the south of Sumeru. To the east of Sumeru is Bhadrashvarsha and to the west is Ketumalavarsha. Harivarsha lies to the south and Ramyakavarsha to the north. Still further north is Hiranmayavarsha and beyond that, Uttara Kuruvarsha.

Brahma's city is on the peak of Sumeru. The river Ganga descends from heaven here and gets divided into four tributaries. Sita flows eastwards, Chakshu westwards, Bhadra Northwards and Alakananda southwards into Bharatavarsha.

There are seven major mountain ranges in Bharatavarsha and their names are Mahendra, Malya, Sahya, Shuktimana, Riksha, Vindhya and Pariyatra. Bharatavarsha itself is divided into nine regions.. The ninth region is completely surrounded by the ocean in all directions. To the east of Bharatavarsha live the Kiratas and to the west the Yavanas.

Below the earth lie the seven regions of the underworld (Patala). Their names are Atala, Vitala, Nitala, Sutala, Talatala, Rasatala and Patala. The daityas, danavas and the snakes (sarpa) live there.
The underworld is a wonderful place, more beautiful than heaven itself. Below the underworld sleeps a great snake, known as Shesha or Ananta. It has a thousand hoods, all covered with jewels.
Also part of the world are hells (naraka), presided over by Yama, the god of death.
(Source: Agni Purana)

Some stray thoughts

Prof Stephen Hawking's in one of his speech said “We showed that if General Relativity was correct, any reasonable model of the universe must start with a singularity. This would mean that science could predict that the universe must have had a beginning, but that it could not predict how the universe should begin: for that one would have to appeal to God.”

Lord Vishnu sowing the seeds of Brahmanda ……..sounds like the singularity that scientists mention.

The universe started with creation of Water and we all know it is the essence of life.

Prithvi refers to our solar system/galaxy rather than the planet. Other galaxies many thousands of light years away are referred to as other lokas.

The technicalities of time and space are adequately addressed by the myth in context of BBT.

The seven seas and seven continents sounds very familiar.

The wise has always accepted that the hells are here and now.

According to the Big Bang model, the universe expanded from an extremely dense and hot state and continues to expand today. A common and useful analogy explains that space itself is expanding, carrying galaxies with it, like raisins in a rising loaf of bread. General relativistic cosmologies, however, do not actually ascribe any 'physicality' to space. The concept of Brahm meets this criteria (in absence of will and thought what remains is truth..as is what is……eternally)

This myth is better tuned to the scientific thoughts of today as compared to other myths regarding the origin of universe.

As of date BBT partially explains the origin of Universe and leaves too many questions unanswered. A thorough and open minded examination of the Vedas may provide insights and ideas towards a scientifically and thelogically acceptable hypotheses.

Finally, the problem of the origin [of the universe] involves a certain metaphysical aspect which may either appeal or revolt a person, but to swallow it as such does need hajmola.

The 62nd Independence Day of India

The celebrations for this ID are marred by a spate of current events and those in the recent past. These include the current protests in Jammu as well as Kashmir, bitter taste leftover from the recent trust vote, acts of terrorisms and future terrorist threats to many cities, current state of economy, etc. It is with a heavy heart that a number of our citizens will celebrate this day. I share with you Sri Aurobindo’s message for India's independence. It was broadcast from the All India Radio on the 14th of August 1947.(www.sriaurobindosociety.org.in/15aug.htm) It is still of relevance. To me its importance seems to have multiplied . The message August 15th, 1947 is the birthday of free India. It marks for her the end of an old era, the beginning of a new age. But we can also make it by our life and acts as a free nation an important date in a new age opening for the whole world, for the political, social, cultural and spiritual future of humanity. August 15th is my own birthday and it is naturally gratifying to me that it should have assumed this vast significance. I take this coincidence, not as a fortuitous accident, but as the sanction and seal of the Divine Force that guides my steps on the work with which I began life, the beginning of its full fruition. Indeed, on this day I can watch almost all the world-movements which I hoped to see fulfilled in my lifetime, though then they looked like impracticable dreams, arriving at fruition or on their way to achievement. In all these movements free India may well play a large part and take a leading position. The first of these dreams was 1. A revolutionary movement which would create a free and united India. India today is free but she has not achieved unity. At one moment it almost seemed as if in the very act of liberation she would fall back into the chaos of separate States which preceded the British conquest. But fortunately it now seems probable that this danger will be averted and a large and powerful, though not yet a complete union will be established. Also, the wisely drastic policy of the Constituent Assembly has made it probable that theproblem of the depressed classes will be solved without schism or fissure. But the old communal division into Hindus and Muslims seems now to have hardened into a permanent political division of the country. It is to be hoped that this settled fact will not be accepted as settled for ever or as anything more than a temporary expedient. For if it lasts, India may be seriously weakened, even crippled: civil strife may remain always possible, possible even a new invasion and foreign conquest, her position among the nations weakened, her destiny impaired or even frustrated. This must not be; the partition must go. Let us hope that that may come about naturally, by an increasing recognition of the necessity not only of peace and concord but of common action, by the practice of common action and the creation of means for that purpose. In this way unity may finally come about under whatever form - the exact form may have a pragmatic but not a fundamental importance. But by whatever means, in whatever way, the division must go; unity must and will be achieved, for it is necessary for the greatness of India's future. 2 The resurgence and liberation of the peoples of Asia and her return to her great role in the progress of human civilisation. Asia has arisen; large parts are now quite free or are at this moment being liberated: its other still subject or partly subject parts are moving through whatever struggled towards freedom. Only a little has to be done and that will be done today or tomorrow. There India has her part to play and has begun to play it with an energy and ability which already indicate the measure of her possibilities and the place she can take in the council of the nations. 3.A world-union forming the outer basis of a fairer, brighter and nobler life for all mankind. That unification of the human world is under way; there is an imperfect initiation organised by struggling against tremendous difficulties. But the momentum is there and it must inevitably increase and conquer. Here too India has begun to play a prominent part and, if she can develop that larger statesmanship which is not limited by the present facts and immediate possibilities but looks into the future and brings it nearer, her presence may make all the difference between a slow and timid and a bold and swift development. A catastrophe may intervene and interrupt or destroy what is being done, but even then the final result is sure. For unification is a necessity of Nature, an inevitable movement. Its necessity for the nations is also clear, for without it the freedom of the small nations may be at any moment in peril and the life even of the large and powerful nations insecure. The unification is therefore to the interests of all, and only human imbecility and stupid selfishness can prevent it; but these cannot stand for ever against the necessity of Nature and the Divine Will. But an outward basis is not enough; there must grow up an international spirit and outlook, international forms and institutions must appear, perhaps such developments, as dual or multilateral citizenship, willed interchange or voluntary fusion of cultures. Nationalism will have fulfilled itself and lost it militancy and would no longer find these things incompatible with self-preservation and the integrality of its outlook. A new spirit of oneness will take hold of the human race. 4.The spiritual gift of India to the world has already begun. India's spirituality is entering Europe and America in an ever increasing measure. That movement will grow; amid the disasters of the time more and more eyes are turning towards her with hope and there is even an increasing resort not only to her teachings, but to her psychic and spiritual practice. 5.The final dream was a step in evolution which would raise man to a higher and larger consciousness and begin the solution of the problems which have perplexed and vexed him since he first began to think and to dream of individual perfection and a perfect society. This is still a personal hope and an idea, an ideal which has begun to take hold both in India and in the West on forward-looking minds, The difficulties in the way are more formidable than in any other field of endeavour, but difficulties were made to be overcome and if the Supreme Will is there, they will be overcome. Here too, if this evolution is to take place, since it must proceed through a growth of the spirit and the inner consciousness, the initiative can come from India and, although the scope must be universal, the central movement may be hers. Such is the content which I put into this date of India's liberation; whether or how far this hope will be justified depends upon the new and free India. All of us can take inspiration from this message and I once again request a Manthan from all Fropperites. Greetings for a happy and contemplative 61st Independence Day.
