Ragging--- a menace

It was heart wrenching to see a medico Aman Kachroo's life cut short and a 20 year old agricultural major student struggling for life due to vile ragging incidents.

A research (link below) by the anti-ragging body CURE has found that 62% of the ragging was physical while 20% was sexual ragging and 13% was physical and sexual. Only in 5% of the cases, ragging was found to be verbal. All this inspite of ragging being outlawed in India in 2001.

http://www.noragging.com/analysis/CR2007_05-16_RaggingInIndiaSummary.pdf

"Society Against Violence in Education" (SAVE), the country's only registered anti-ragging NGO, calculated that nine teenagers are killed every year due to ragging while hundreds of them get seriously injured, hospitalised or disabled or scarred psychologically due to ragging by their seniors in colleges.

Inspite of Supreme Court's directions and R.K. Raghavan committee's recommendations, only six states have formulated anti-ragging laws and other states have just looked the other way till now. In Tamil Nadu, anti-ragging law was enacted in 1997 after unforgettable death of Pon Navarasu who was tortured and cut into pieces in 1996 in name of ragging. Though severity has come down in Tamil Nadu, still the menace continues in lesser intensity. Mohan kartik (committed suicide after forced bathed with his own urine in 2004), deepa (set herself ablaze after ragging in 2000) lost lives in Tamil nadu after this law came into existence. This problem is so acute a nuisance that a voluntary organisation EXNORA instituted an award for ragging-free college.

Educational institutions are places of learning and not places to show off perversions. Even premier institutions like IITs, IIMs, NITs etc. aren't free from this scourge, and far worse sometimes deaths due to ragging are passed off as deaths due to academic pressure. This worst form of human rights abuse prevalent in student community must be curbed for healthy education system. Ironically some juniors who suffered ragging in their junior years try to defend this on name of interaction between juniors and seniors (this argument is a great farce anyway) when they become seniors. This darker aspect in human psyche that leads to this human rights abuse may be better studied with psychological models like Stanford Prison experiment and Milgram experiment.

Installing CCTVs in hostels, random policing inside hostels and campuses by teachers and students, weekly/fortnightly anonymous survey of the entire first year batch to find out if any sort of ragging is taking place, installing statewide helplines for victims of this menace to seek help with anonymity, providing counselling for aggressors and providing support for the silent victims-- have been suggested in various quarters. Apart from stringent laws and prevention measures as above, cooperation from civil society and a greater awareness campaign among the student community are necessary to minimise and if possible to eliminate this menace.

An Update as on 21 June 2009:

Anti-Ragging helpline 1800-180-5522, a round the clock, toll free helpline has been launched by Human Resource Development Ministry of India for distressed students to register complaints with relative anonymity. Complaints can also be written to helpline@antiragging.net. This is a very positive step coming from the Government.

A Ray of hope in calamity

May 13, the day.... serial bomb blasts rocked the pink city --Jaipur ..... and the dastardly terror act left more than 65 dead and nearly 200 people maimed or injured. In the midst of this calamity, a ray of hope has emerged from an unexpected quarter, bureacracy-- academic bureacracy to be precise. Generally bureacracy is known for its red-tapism, unimaginative and less public-friendly proposals but in this case the cliche doesn't hold true.

Bureacratic set up in Rajasthan University is examining a proposal to give straightaway admission to youngsters who lost their parents or were themselves injured in the inhuman act of terror and are willing to pursue higher studies. The admission this fall will also relax the requirement of minimum marks in the qualifying examination for the victims. The outright intake of students will be open in all streams and those affected will also be exempted from payment of fees for a specific period. Free accomodation in hostels for youngsters who have lost their near and dear ones is also being mooted.

This is the first time, an educational institution has involved itself in extending healing touch to the victims of terror attack in an unique way. Kudos to vice-chancellor of Rajasthan University N.K. Jain and the syndicate of the university for this healing touch.

How can we relate to Mother's Day??

Mother's day is being celebrated on second sunday in the month of May, every year. It's recognised as a national holiday in U.S. It's a different matter that the founder of Mother's day "Anna Marie Jarvis" after a point of time, protested against crass commercialisation of this day thereby forgetting the spirit of the day, and went to jail. Our culture has always given special place to parents and especially mother. So do we require this token day to remember mothers for their love and sacrifice? That's at best a debatable question.

I received a nice piece of forward from one of my U.S friends' about mother's day and its signific
ance. It's quite heart-rending. Though the writing contains many references to situations that can be associated with U.S life style, people who read this can always relate to the spirit of motherhood which is common to all, cutting across the barriers of countries, religions, races, cultures, languages and ethnicity and how children generally tend to take mother's love and sacrifice for granted across the divides.

The Mother

1. When you were 1 year old, she fed you and bathed
you. you thanked her by crying all the night.

2. When you were 2 years old, she taught you to walk.
You thanked her by running away when she called.

3. When you were 3 years old, she made all your meals
with love. You thanked her by tossing your plate on
    the floor.

4. When you were 4 years old, she gave you some
crayons. You thanked her by coloring the dinning room
    table.

5. When you were 5 years old, she dressed you for the
holidays. You thanked her by looping into the nearest
    pile of mud.

6. When you were 6 years old, she walked you into
school. You thanked her by screaming, "I'M NOT GOING".

7. When you were 7 years old, she bought you a
baseball. You thanked her by throwing it through the
    next-door-neighbor window.

8. When you were 8 years old, she handed you an ice
cream. You thanked her by dripping it all over you
    lap.

9. When you were 9 years old, she paid for piano
lessons. You thanked her by never even bothering to
    practice it.

10. When you were 10 years old, she drove you all day,
from soccer to gymnastic to one birthday party after
another. You thanked her by jumping out of the car and
     never looking back.

11. When you were 11 years old, she took you and your
friends to the movies. You thanked her by asking to
     sit in the different row.

12. When you were 12 years old, she warned you not to
watch certain TV shows. You thanked her by waiting
     until she left the house.

13. When you were 13, she suggested a haircut that was
becoming. You thanked her by telling her she had no
     taste.

14. When you were 14, she paid for a month away at
summer camp. You thanked her by forgetting to write a
     single letter.

15. When you were 15, she came home from work, looking
for a hug. You thanked her by having your bedroom door
     locked.

16. When you were 16, she taught you how to drove her
car. You thanked her by taking it every chance you
     could.

17. When you were 17, she was expecting an important
call. You thanked her by being on the phone all night.

18. When you were 18, she cried at your school
graduation. You thanked her by staying out partying
     until dawn.

19. When you were 19, she paid for your college
tuition, drove you to campus, carried your bags. You
thanked her by saying good-bye outside the dorm so you
wouldn't be embarrassed in front of you friends.

20. When you were 20, she asked whether you were
seeing anyone. You thanked her by saying "It's none of
     your business".

21. When you were 21, she suggested certain careers
for your future. You thanked her by saying "I don't
     want to be like you".

22. When you were 22, she hugged you at your college
graduation. You thanked her by asking whether she
could pay for a trip to Europe.

23. When you were 23, she gave you furniture for your
first apartment. You thanked her by telling your
     friend it was ugly.

24. When you were 24, she met your fiancé and asked
about your plans for the future. You thanked her by
     glaring and growling, "Muuhh-ther, please!"

25. When you were 25, she helped to pay for your
wedding, and she cried and told how deeply she loved
you. You thanked her by moving halfway across the
     country.

26. When you were 30, she called with some advice on
the baby. You thanked by telling her, "Things are
     different now."

27. When you were 40, she called to remind you of a
relative's birthday. You thanked her by saying you
     were "really busy right now."

28. When you were 50, she fell ill and needed you to
take care of her. You thanked her by reading about the
burden parents become to their children.

29. And then, one day, she quietly died. And
everything you never did, came crashing down like
     thunder on your heart.

IF SHE' S STILL AROUND, NEVER FORGET TO LOVE HER MORE THAN EVER.
AND IF SHE' S NOT,
REMEMBER HER UNCONDITIONAL LOVE AND TRY TO GIFT THE SAME TO YOUR
OFFSPRINGS.

REMEMBER YOUR MOTHER CAN HAVE MORE THAN ONE CHILD BUT AS A CHILD YOU
CAN HAVE ONLY ONE MOTHER FOR LIFE!

Mother's Day Resolution:

In India, sex ratio has changed so much that, 972 girls versus 1000 boys from year 1901 has become 933 girls versus 1000 boys in year 2007. At this rate, at some point in future, we'll be having lesser and lesser mothers. Female foeticide/infanticide is an important reason for this sad state of affairs. Even at this age, people tend to prefer boys over girls. With all the available technology, sex selection is made, which is usually biased against girls. So how relevant is this mother's day for Indians? This occasion should remind us the pitfalls, as a society we're facing with the bias against girls and should make us resolute to eradicate such inhuman treatment to to-be-moms.

Suicide Prevention and an Individual's Role

Suicide Prevention and an Individual's Role When I read about suicide on one of the ezblogs, I felt I should do a post on this topic. These days we see a spurt of suicides in Farmers, Army jawans, IT community etc. in our country- India. We've come to accept the news of suicide reports in media as mere statistics. But even an individual can play a role in preventing suicide. Yes as an individual, you or for that matter I can make difference in someone's life (who's nearer/dearer to us) at that point of time when a -few moments spared- can make all the difference between Life and Death. From my personal experience I can say that my timely comforting helped in saving two of my friends' life though I won't claim credit for that and I will express my gratitude to the "Creator" who happened to have made that happen. Suicide is considered as a cry for help and people who are feeling suicidal are always caught in a conflict between the wish to live and the urge to die. People who commit suicide take this extreme step only because they are confused and not able to take any other decision and they are forced to take this decision. According to Medical Science: “When a person is depressed, the level of serotonin, a chemical messenger that transmits signals between nerve cells becomes low in the part of the brain that controls the mood. When the depression is severe, it might lead a person to suicide...” . Protective/Preventive factors include high self-esteem and social network, especially with family and friends, having social support, being in a stable relationship, and religious or spiritual commitment. September 10th is World SUICIDE Prevention Day (Designated by WHO & UN). This year(2007) the theme of World Suicide Prevention Day is "Suicide across the Life Span." This theme has been adopted to emphasize the fact that suicide occurs in all ages and suicide prevention and intervention strategies may be adapted to meet the needs of different age groups. The fact that children as young as five can feel suicidal because of neglect should be a worrying factor. There are many voluntary organisations working in the field of suicide prevention. People who are in distress or people who want to help others in distress but don't have the resources to help can always contact these organisations. For more information and support (support is free and confidential), people can make use of appropriate contact details given below.
For many life is a fleeting dream, Revealing only what is on our minds. Inside the prism of the self we see Each object as a refraction on our walls. Nothingness awaits, as sure as sun and moon. Did I not have you, dear friend, I might, Shadow on a wall, or be a nothing. How much we need a word beyond our sea: In despair and laughter, thoughts of mutual bonds, Perhaps, with luck, unraveling a seam. (Dedicated to Friends)

BUSH and the Bird-flu

George Bush jr., continues to polarise the world opinion with his policies. But this doesn't deal with his macho/dumb (depending upon the political divide you belong) political decisions rather it's about humour. Yes he's inspiring a new genre of jokes called Bush Jokes. One such joke: Bush U.S President and Carl Rove his powerful political advisor are having a conversation about Bird Flu: BUSH and the Bird-flu Rove: I am really worried. Bush: What about? Rove: The bird flu. Bush: The bird flew? Where? Rove: Everywhere. Bush: The bird flew everywhere? Rove: According to WHO. Bush: I don't know. Rove: You don't know what? Bush: Who said where. Rove: That's right. WHO has a list. Bush: How would I know? Rove: Because I just told you. The latest word is Turkey. Bush: A Turkey flew? Rove: If you want to call it that. Bush: How is it possible, a Turkey flew everywhere? Rove: That would be complicated. Bush: Then why did you tell me that? Rove: WHO just reported it. I was filling you in. Bush: Then I'm asking you. Who reported it? Rove: That's right. Bush: Let's start from the beginning. Rove: Vietnam Bush: What about Vietnam? Rove: The beginning. The bird flu. Bush: The bird flew all the way from Vietnam? Rove: Yes. According to WHO. Bush: That's what I want to find out.....

A funny Misunderstanding one won't forget...

I share this piece of humour with you all.... This is a funny misunderstanding of words.... It's sure to tickle your funny bone. Here We go: In the days when you couldn't count on a public toilet facility, an English woman was planning a trip to India. She was registered to stay in a small guest house owned by the local schoolmaster. She was concerned as to whether the guest house contained a WC. In England, a bathroom is commonly called a WC which stands for "Water Closet". She wrote to the schoolmaster inquiring of the facilities about the WC. The school master, not fluent in English, asked the local priest if he knew the meaning of WC. Together they pondered possible meanings of the letters and concluded that the lady wanted to know if there was a "Wayside Chapel" near the house.... a bathroom never entered their minds. So the schoolmaster wrote the following reply: Dear Madam, I take great pleasure in informing you that the WC is located 9 miles from the house. It is located in the middle of a grove of pine trees, surrounded by lovely grounds. It is capable of holding 229 people and is open on Sundays and Thursdays. As there are many people expected in the summer months, I suggest you arrive early. There is, however, plenty of standing room. This is an unfortunate situation especially if you are in the habit of going regularly. It may be of some interest to you that my daughter was married in the WC as it was there that she met her husband. It was a wonderful event. There were 10 people in every seat. It was wonderful to see the ex-pressions on their faces. My wife, sadly, has been ill and unable to go recently. It has been almost a year since she went last, which pains her greatly. You will be pleased to know that many people bring their lunch and make a day of it. Others prefer to wait till the last minute and arrive just in time! I would recommend your ladyship plan to go on a Thursday as there is an organ accompaniment. The acoustics are excellent and even the most delicate sounds can be heard everywhere. We are holding a bazaar to provide plush seats for all since many feel it is long needed. I look forward to escorting you there myself and seating you in a place where you can be seen by all. With deepest regards, The Schoolmaster
